Rainbow Warrior visiting Maldives as part of two ... - Minivan News

Rainbow Warrior visiting Maldives as part of two month Indian Ocean tour thumbnail

The Rainbow Warrior ? flagship of environmental NGO Greenpeace ? is visiting the Maldives as part of a two-month tour of the Indian Ocean.

?Greenpeace has come to the Indian Ocean in order to learn about fishing activities in the region, and to talk to communities, governments, officials and the tuna fishing industry, with the intention of working together to combat overfishing and to stop destructive and illegal fishing,? the international organisation stated.

During the vessel?s visit to the Maldives, the crew will document the pole and line fishery in the southern atoll, hold a one-day conference on sustainable tuna, involving political, fishing and commercial sectors joint monitoring and surveillance with the Maldivian coast guard in Maldivian waters. The vessel will be opened to school children in Laamu Gan.

Executive Secretary of the International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF), Athif Shakoor, who is coordinating the Greenpeace visit, told Minivan News that the Rainbow Warrior?s visit was significant for the Maldives, as was the organisation?s endorsement of pole and line fishing methods.

?Pole and line fishing is more sustainable and central to employment in many communities,? he explained.

As a sustainable fishing method, pole and line fishing could be marketed as a premium brand and the higher prices passed to the fishermen, Shakoor said.

Minivan News has previously reported that retail premiums for pole and line-caught fish were being largely absorbed by the supermarket chains that sold them, leaving Maldivian fishermen to compete with the technologically-advanced and substantially less sustainable fishing vessels of other nations.

In October 2011, Minivan News reported concerns from fisheries authorities and industry that the country was effectively ?under siege? by the vessels of other nations ? particularly the French and Spanish ? which had ringed the Maldives? Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with ?Fish Aggregation Devices? (FADS).

Fish such as tuna are naturally attracted to the floating object, such as a buoy, typically fitted with a sonar device capable of determining the quantity of fish below, and a satellite uplink that communicates this to the nearby fishing vessel. The vessel?s net does not discriminate between the predators and scavengers attracted by the target fish population around the FAD.

The local canning industry has also expressed concern about being unable to buy fish at a competitive price from local fishermen, who were instead selling their catch to canning conglomerates in Thailand, which were then labelling and exporting the product as a ?Maldivian? pole and line product with little oversight of the supply chain.

The Rainbow Warrior

The first Rainbow Warrior was bombed by French agents in 1987 while it was in New Zealand preparing to lead a flotilla of ships in protest against French nuclear testing. The explosion killed a Greenpeace photographer.

After two years of international arbitration the French government was ordered to pay Greenpeace US$8.159 million.

The current Rainbow Warrior vessel was commissioned in 1989. In 2005 the vessel ran aground on a coral reef in the Philippines while inspecting it for coral bleaching, and was ordered to pay US$7000 for the damage caused. Greenpeace paid the fine but claimed the Philippines?government had given it outdated navigational charts.

Radiation still high in Fukushima fish

Levels of radioactive caesium in fish around Fukushima are as high now as they were a year ago. That suggests there may be an unknown source of continued contamination.

However, researchers are saying consumers should not be overly concerned.

The new finding emerged when Ken Buesseler from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts in the US analysed data from almost 9000 fish samples, over a year after the meltdown at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant. He found the amount of caesium-134 in the fish has not decreased in the last year. Since the isotope has a half-life of only two years, Buesseler concluded caesium-134 must still be leaking into their environment.

Levels were highest among bottom-dwelling fish, suggesting the contamination is associated with the seafloor. Possible sources are contaminated groundwater or the water used to cool the reactors, both of which could be leaking into the ocean. A third possibility is that caesium has collected in the sediment in the seafloor and is being slowly released into the water, he says.

"There's no doubt there's a continued source of contamination," Buesseler says.

Mitsuo Uematsu, of the University of Tokyo, says this makes sense. Rivers wash contaminated sediments into the ocean, which, along with plankton and other organisms that can collect caesium, sink and create a reservoir on the seafloor, he explains.

Temperature link?

Not everyone is convinced, however. Geochemist Michio Aoyama at Japan's Meteorological Research Institute says that since caesium-134 levels also remain elevated in fish higher up in the water column, seafloor contamination can't be the whole story.

Aoyama says there is no evidence contaminated groundwater is leaking into the ocean and the level of caesium coming from water used to cool the reactors is known to be very low.

He has his own theory that he and others are hoping to test: there's some evidence fish have a higher concentration of caesium in the summer, suggesting warm weather is connected to higher concentrations.

'Not a cause for concern'

Surprisingly, perhaps, Buesseler doesn't think his finding should alarm consumers. New Japanese regulations are so stringent that many fish consumed around the world naturally contain much higher levels of other radioactive isotopes.

"You hear people saying 'any caesium is bad'. Well, you can't really say that when we're eating fish that have natural levels of potassium-40 in them that are 10 times higher and not considered a health risk," says Buesseler.

Buesseler says the strict regulations, introduced in the aftermath of the disaster at Fukushima, were a reasonable attempt to bolster public confidence in approved seafood. But he worries they had the opposite effect, making them too wary.

Uematsu agrees some Japanese consumers are more worried about caesium contamination than they need to be.

"It doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned about these man-made radionuclides but we should put it in the context of these [other] sources of man-made and natural isotopes we are exposed to," says Buesseler.

Germany's Thoughts On Economic Stimulation : News & Society

You are here: Home / Economics / Germany?s Thoughts On Economic Stimulation

Here?s something fascinating in?business news?these days. The country of Germany is going to cut taxes as it goes forth with plans to stabilize its economy. According to Germany?s Chancellor Angela Merkel, this will help stimulate the economy throughout Europe. She also said that Germany is feeling the crunch created by the collapsed economy in Southern Europe.

She also stated that her nation feels the responsibility of doing whatever it takes, including tax cuts, to stimulate domestic economy. They are also setting goals for maintaining demand for imported goods from other nations in the euro zone.

Just last May the parliament of Germany refused to approve plans to reduce taxes by 6 billion euros. Those who opposed this plan felt it was not in the best interest of the nation to approve it when the nation was struggling to balance its budget.

For the more conservative minded individual, cutting taxes to stimulate growth just makes sense. One has to admit though, that not everyone agrees. Some folks seem to believe that the only way to stimulate the economy of any nation would be to spend even more money. Maybe these people should try to balance their own budgets this way.

Small?business news: spending more money to grow a business when it is struggling just does not make sense. Creating more cash flow problems is not the answer to a stable economy. Yes, sometimes it is a step in the right direction to make investments for growth, but overspending is not the answer when the budget is falling apart.

It is never the right thing to do to jeopardize a country?s security, no matter what country we are talking about. There are times when doing so is just an act of treason if these decisions are made with vengeance against the country in question.

Because some people think that Europe is liberal overall, it is often thought that taxes would never be cut here. Nevertheless, there is something that can be learned from history when people just listen.

Because of the economic collapse of recent years, some nations in Europe have been hit hard. Others have learned from experience that entitlements gone awry are not in the best interests of the people. Maybe others in the world should take a hint from what Germany has found out.

Making people dependent of government has its downside. When greater numbers of people are not working, are we not reducing the funds that are used for entitlements? By cursing at the wealthy because of their tenacity to make money, we are causing further societal decay.

What is a nation to do when they find themselves in this situation? Yes, hire those leaders who have a higher calling than mere interest in having their own way.

NOAA to East: Beware of coming 'Frankenstorm'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling "Frankenstorm" is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.

Government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday.

Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damage.

The storm is a combination of Hurricane Sandy, now in the Caribbean, an early winter storm in the West, and a blast of arctic air from the North. They're predicted to collide and park over the country's most populous coastal corridor and reach as far inland as Ohio.

The hurricane part of the storm is likely to come ashore somewhere in New Jersey on Tuesday morning, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco. But this is a storm that will affect a far wider area, so people all along the East have to be wary, Cisco said.

Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, mostly from the hurricane part, he said, and the other parts of the storm will reach inland from North Carolina northward.

Once the hurricane part of the storm hits, "it will get broader. It won't be as intense, but its effects will be spread over a very large area," the National Hurricane Center's chief hurricane specialist, James Franklin, said Thursday.

One of the more messy aspects of the expected storm is that it just won't leave. The worst of it should peak early Tuesday, but it will stretch into midweek, forecasters say. Weather may start clearing in the mid-Atlantic the day after Halloween and Nov. 2 in the Northeast, Cisco said.

"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Cisco said Thursday from NOAA's northern storm forecast center in College Park, Md. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm."

With every hour, meteorologists are getting more confident that this storm is going to be bad and they're able to focus their forecasts more.

The New York area could see around 5 inches of rain during the storm, while there could be snow southwest of where it comes inland, Cisco said. That could mean snow in eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, western Virginia, and the Shenandoah Mountains, he said.

Both private and federal meteorologists are calling this a storm that will likely go down in the history books.

"We don't have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting," Cisco said.

It is likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing coastal flooding potential, NOAA forecasts warn. And with some trees still leafy and the potential for snow, power outages could last to Election Day, some meteorologists fear.

Some have compared it to the so-called Perfect Storm that struck off the coast of New England in 1991, but Cisco said that one didn't hit as populated an area and is not comparable to what the East Coast may be facing. Nor is it like last year's Halloween storm, which was merely an early snowstorm in the Northeast.

"The Perfect Storm only did $200 million of damage and I'm thinking a billion," said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the private service Weather Underground. "Yeah, it will be worse."

But this is several days in advance, when weather forecasts are usually far less accurate. The National Hurricane Center only predicts five days in advance, and each long-range forecast moves Sandy's track closer to the coast early next week. The latest has the storm just off central New Jersey's shore at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

As forecasts became more focused Thursday, the chance of the storm bypassing much of the coast and coming ashore in Maine faded, Cisco said.

The hurricane center's Franklin called it "a big mess for an awful lot of people in the early part of next week."

Dundalk toll road operator sues over alleged outstanding debt of ?1.57m

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

A company operating the Dundalk bypass toll road has sued over an alleged outstanding debt of ?1.57m.

North Link M1 Ltd claims it expects to receive ?433,545 in payments from Celtic Roads Group (Dundalk) Ltd to cover payments due to it over the period April to the end of Oct 2012 when, it alleges, the correct sum owed is some ?1.57m.

In proceedings transferred to the Commercial Court yesterday by Mr Justice Peter Kelly, North Link claims the defendant has failed to adhere to the terms of a 2004 operation and maintenance agreement, under which North Link agreed to operate and maintain the bypass toll road in return for payments by Celtic Roads.

It claims Celtic has refused to accept a decision on a new level of payments made by an independent assessor, appointed after the two companies failed to agree on payments, after a review in 2011.

The assessor issued his determination last March setting out a formula for calculation of the payments to run for a period of seven years.

On foot of that, North Link had sought payments for ?1.45m to cover the period from early April to the end of Sept 2012, but it claims the defendant has continued to makepayments at the lower rates operational prior to the assessor?s determination.

While the defendant in Jul 2012 claimed there were several errors in the determination, it had raised none of those issues during the review process, Brian O?Moore, counsel for North Link, told the judge yesterday.

In those circumstances, North Link is claiming ?1.5m allegedly owed to the end of this month and a declaration the defendant is bound by the assessor?s determination.

Cruise sues for $50 million over Suri stories

By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

Tom Cruise filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit on Wednesday against magazines that claimed he had abandoned his daughter, Suri, following his divorce from actress Katie Holmes.

Keith Bedford / Reuters file

Tom Cruise carries his daughter Suri past a group of photographers as they make their way from a hotel in New York on July 17.

The "Mission: Impossible" star filed the lawsuit in U.S. court in Los Angeles against the publishers of celebrity magazines In Touch and Life & Style, Cruise's attorney Bert Fields said in a statement.

"Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She's a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has 'abandoned' her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible," Fields said in a statement.

The lawsuit refers to two cover stories published by the magazines in July and September with the headlines "Abandoned by Daddy" and "Abandoned by her dad." The September story from In Touch claimed that 6-year-old Suri, the only child of Cruise and Holmes, had gone more 44 days without seeing him.

The magazines, owned by privately held German publishing group Bauer Media, did not immediately return calls for comment.

Holmes filed for divorce in June after six years of marriage, seeking sole custody of Suri, in a move that took Cruise by surprise when he was filming in Iceland. They swiftly agreed to a custody arrangement and settled other matters but details have been kept private.

Fields said that despite repeated stories in celebrity media about Cruise and his personal life during his 30-year Hollywood career, the actor rarely resorted to litigation.

"He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleazy peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue," he added.

Fields said Cruise was seeking damages of $50 million and would "undoubtedly give the money to charity" if he wins the case.

China Mobile confirms Nokia?s Lumia 920T, offering what could be a much-needed gamechanger

Rumors of a custom model of Nokia?s Lumia 920 smartphone designed to work on China Mobile?s 3G and upcoming 4G networks leaked out last week, but the device?s existence appears to have been (temporarily) confirmed by the carrier.

I say temporarily because China Mobile posted a microblog message to Sina Weibo teasing the Lumia 920T as coming next month, but it quickly deleted the message, though not before it got picked up by Chinese bloggers.

China Mobile confirms Nokias Lumia 920T, offering what could be a much needed gamechanger

Note the official China Mobile account watermark in the bottom right corner

The deleted message reportedly said the device would sport a 4.5-inch 1280 by 768 screen with the Snapdragon quad-core 1.5GHz processor, so the same main specs as the US version of the Lumia 920 that was announced in September. The Lumia 920 is selling for $149.99 on contract with AT&T in the US.

The key difference is that the Lumia 920T will include support for TD-SCDMA, which is China Mobile?s special 3G standard, as well as TD-LTE, the protocol that the operator is using for its 4G network.

Nokia had an?embarrassing gaffe on its hands with the Lumia 920 after it was discovered that demo shots that supposedly represented its image stabilization features were actually filmed on a DSLR. The incident prompted?an investigation?from the company?s ethics officer.

Previously the undisputed leader of the mobile industry, Nokia has fallen on hard times. The company recently announced plans to offer a senior convertible bond note in hopes of improving liquidity.

Nokia lost $754 million last quarter and sold just 2.9 million Lumia phones, down 1.1 million sequentially. As such, the company?s continued partnership with China Mobile is vital to its comeback. With nearly 700 million subscribers, the carrier is worth pursuing on numbers alone, but Nokia also has an added benefit that it doesn?t yet have to compete against Apple?s iPhone on the network. Apple?s iPhone 5 is expected to arrive on rivals China Unicom and China Telecom soon, but cooperation with China Mobile still appears to be a ways out.

China Mobile currently boast more than 75 million 3G customers, so if Nokia?s Lumia 920T succeeeds in capturing sales from even a fraction of those, it will represent a significant portion of the company?s sales volume as compared to recent quarters.

Interest in Windows Phone has been on the rise among consumers in China, and the growing number of Chinese-language Windows rumor blogs and microblogs attests to that fact. Though its market share has eroded quickly in the face of competition from Android and Apple, Nokia should still have remnants of brand loyalty among the country?s consumers that it can tap into with a fresh device.

Nokia should also get some help in China from its partner Microsoft. The Windows maker just launched its online store in the country to promote its Surface tablet, while also marketing its Windows Phone platform.

Meanwhile, back in the US, Microsoft is gearing up for a big launch of its Windows Phone 8 platform on October 29th. It?s going to a busy day, though, as Google has also scheduled its own event to announce new Android devices on the same day.

Self Improvement | Nobody Really Cares | The Self Improvement Blog

By Jamie A Flexman -

You wake up in the morning, you look in the mirror, what do you see? Your reflection stares back, an outer shell that betrays what lies behind. You feel so good yet you look so bad. How can this be? You worry that you have aged 5 years overnight. This isn?t me. I don?t look like this, you say.

Nobody cares.

You put on some clothes. Does my shirt look good with my tie? The mind struggles to remember if you have worn this combination before. Yes, once. That job interview, but that was over a year ago. You have worn many great ties, yet when was the last time someone complimented you on them?

Nobody cares.

You step outside. The wind is strong today; your carefully groomed hair is struggling to survive the attack from the elements. I need a haircut you think to yourself. I don?t have enough wax in my hair today, it?s getting messy.

Nobody cares.

Your day continues as it always has. You speak to that cute girl in the canteen. She smiles and asks you how your day has been. You start to panic. You become worried that the monotony of your day will reduce her to tears of boredom. You lie. Your day has been great.

Nobody cares.

You get down the gym. It?s the first time in two weeks. Those weights you lifted so easily last time out become a struggle. You really should drop down a bit to a more comfortable weight. The guys are there, they are lifting a lot. You feel ashamed that you can?t compete with them.

Nobody cares.

You have a date tonight. You want to have a great time, yet something nags at you. Your eyes dart around the bar looking for disapproval. There isn?t any. Why would there be? Your date is 10 years older than you, God forbid you bump into one of your friends. You look around yet again, anxiety rises. You suggest moving somewhere else.

Nobody cares.

You arrive back home, reflecting on the day you left behind. Your head is racing and your anxiety is taking over. Wondering why life has to be this hard. You focus on tomorrow, and the inevitable struggle that it will contain. Can you cope with the pressure of perfection? Sleep eludes you. Happiness eludes you. You are simply living your life not to your own standards but to a false ideal.

Really, nobody cares.

The fact is we go through our days constantly worrying about what other people will think about us. Insignificant aspects of our life that seem like a world changing event yet in reality most people will never even notice, let alone care about. You think people will care that you have gained 3lbs? No, nobody cares. Why would they? Do they even notice? No they don?t. They are far more worried about their own bodies to care about yours.

Live your life to the standards that you set for yourself not the standards set by other people, let alone those that you create in your head. People do care about you, of course they do, but they don?t care about the trivial things so relax and learn to let these thoughts wash over you.

The only approval you should ever seek is that of your own.

Your integrity is the only thing that matters.

What to do next

How to quit your job find your passion and live life on your own terms are just some of the subjects I talk about on my website. If you like what you have read, please come and visit.

Benin prosecutor: 3 plotted to poison president

COTONOU, Benin (AP) ? Benin's state prosecutor says that the president's doctor and his niece were part of a failed plot to poison the leader of the West African nation by changing his medicine with something toxic.

Prosecutor Justin Gbenameto said late Monday that Benin's President Boni Yayi escaped the attempted poisoning. He said the plot was foiled because the president's niece, who was arrested and charged, had informed her sister who told the president.

Gbenameto said the niece and the doctor were each promised payment of 1 billion CFA ($1.9 million) if they carried out the poisoning.

He said Dr. Ibrahim Cisse Mama, the president's doctor, Former Minister of Trade Moudjaidou Soumanou and one of the president's nieces Zouberatou Kora were arrested Sunday and on Monday were charged with conspiracy and attempted murder.

Today?s Japan Photo: Osaka Castle Manhole Cover

For?Today?s Japan Photo, we take a look at a very interesting manhole cover that is found in?Osaka Prefecture, and one it is the beautiful picture capturing?Osaka Castle?(???), which is?one of Japan?s most famous castles.

Osaka Castle, which is a famous landmark, a popular sightseeing spot, and the symbol of Osaka, contains thirteen structures which have been designated as Important Cultural Assets by the Japanese government. Of special note are the grand gates and turrets along the outer moat. The steep walls that rise close to 30 meters high are made of huge blocks of stone that were transported to Osaka from quarries over 100 kilometers away. The sheer height of the walls and the wide moats they rise above make for a grand sight that can be matched by no other castle in Japan.

Nonprofit Law Blog: Attorney For Nonprofits

GT VB A

I often get asked about my work, especially by young law students and lawyers, but also by others looking for a meaningful profession. Some are attracted by what they perceive to be the money and respect associated with being an attorney combined with the social good (or saving grace) associated with working for nonprofits. Others look to position themselves to be able to effect change in a particular area (e.g., social justice, women?s rights, environment, education).

When asked what led me to this work, I start by pointing to a singular event: laying off all my coworkers at large branch of a global retailer where I was the operations manager. This made me rethink and ultimately reject the familiar platitude ?work to live, don?t live to work.? I wanted to find a job that was meaningful and an expression of my identity. Having been blessed with circumstances that allowed me to pursue this goal, two graduate degrees and several jobs later, I started my law practice focused on serving nonprofit organizations on January 1, 2005.

So, what does an attorney for nonprofits do? I certainly can?t speak for all of my peers whose practices vary widely, but I represent mostly 501(c)(3) charitable organizations on corporate and tax matters. On a given day, I may work on matters for 5-10 clients, doing things like counseling executives through compliance issues, reviewing or drafting governance documents and contracts, preparing tax-exemption applications, structuring mergers and collaborations, advising on operational issues and strategies, and working though earned income ? unrelated business issues. The missions of our clients vary widely: education, social justice, health, environment, arts, religion, international poverty relief, social services, children, animal welfare, scientific research, disaster relief, etc. So, while I may regularly work on certain types of matters repetitively (e.g., reviewing bylaws), there are always unique situations and interesting people to work with, and my expertise grows with each client. Because we regularly work with the 90% of nonprofits that are smaller or medium-sized organizations without in-house counsel, its also means a lot of teaching, which I love.

Apart from client work, I also find it very rewarding to write and present to audiences on a wide variety of legal issues affecting nonprofits and social enterprises and to teach nonprofit law at a local university. These activities also keep me sharp as they require that I continually read, attend seminars and conferences, and learn about my practice area and trends affecting the sector. They also allow me to be creative as I pursue my passion of finding how to engage audiences in unique, effective and fun ways. Providing pro bono counsel, serving on boards, and performing other community services further enrich my professional life.

On top of all of this, I must of course run a business and think about finances, employees, marketing, and an array of other matters every small business owner must manage. While it?s great to be in control of my business and career, managing is also the most challenging part of my job and why I sometimes entertain the thought of combining with another practice and giving up that role. For now, that's an unlikely prospect because I value the ability to create a unique work environment that emphasizes professional and personal growth equally with client service (and above profit maximization) in a manner that may not possible in another firm. When those circumstances are matched with an amazing person, I know first-hand wonderful things are possible (thank you, Emily). I believe in the values of a B Corporation and am proud to be a member of the social business community.

As satisfying as I find my job, there are drawbacks to working in a very small firm, which some will find more significant than others. The collegial and team-oriented atmosphere of working in a more populated workplace with common goals is missing. Also, we do not regularly engage in cutting-edge research and advocacy on what may or may not be permissible under the law, which big firm attorneys with large institutional clients may find is a satisfying part of their practice. In addition, as outside counsel, we are removed from more directly experiencing the ultimate impact of our work.

For me, the drawbacks are minor compared to the benefits of being able to (i) shape our firm and the ways we serve our clients and our community, (ii) determine the nature of my job and workday, and (iii) develop more meaningful relationships with my coworkers. And because I trust that we know how to work to bring value to our clients and strengthen their abilities to make the world a better place, providing counsel to many clients serving in a variety of ways is, for me, even more rewarding than working for a single organization. It also frees me up to write, speak, teach, and reach out to other organizations and individuals in ways that otherwise might not be possible. Most importantly, working within a small firm allows me to provide these same opportunities to my coworkers.

Tips To Effectively Market Your Business Online | Eric Chua : Life ...

The world of Website marketing is growing exponentially. From online newsletters to static websites, it is so simple to use the Internet to market your product. Read this article for some suggestions on how to leverage the multitude of electronic communication channels in your marketing strategy.

Present your products as an efficient and simple solution to a problem your audience can relate to. Simplicity will always win out over complexity. So, cater to the basic human desire for easy over hard by using phrases that show just how easy it is to use your product or service. This is an easy way to boost your business.

Ensure that information that is relevant to your customers is included on your website. A simple digital billboard featuring your hours of operation, address and toll free number is simply not going to garner you much business. Build up your website with useful content, interesting reviews and other things that shows your visitors that you know what you are doing and that you are not just a fly by night presence.

TIP! A lot of folks might not think your advertisments are truthful. The fact is that most folks aren?t buying the stuff they read in advertisements, so don?t turn them off by simply talking big.

Give your customers the chance to sign up to your Ezine. This effective marketing tool is especially potent if you create an interesting Ezine that promotes a strong relationship with subscribers. Add a personal touch by including photos of yourself, your family or your employees. Don?t be afraid to share funny or interesting stories from your personal life with your readers. Arouse their curiosity with an interesting subject line in the Ezine, such as the easiest or fastest way to achieve a specific goal.

Having a secure ordering system is imperative. Services such as Paypal allow you to use a payment system on your site that offers safe monetary transactions. Before customers send their personal payment information to you, have them create a secure, password-protected account.

Always make sure you have a slogan and a logo for your business, even if you?re just running a small, Internet based firm. These tools are going to assist with building brand recognition. A potential customer can remember a slogan for a while. When a customer is ready to buy a product, he might remember your slogan even if he doesn?t remember the name of your business. In the age of the internet, that?s not a big problem.

TIP! Try including a survey or poll to measure how a reader feel about content on your site. Not only will this help you adjust the type of content that you include, it will also make your users feel like you care about their opinions.

Try your hand at mobile marketing. You can give your site visitors the opportunity to get text alerts when a special sale is going on or when a new product is launched. This is a newer method of advertising that will give you assistance in your online marketing campaign.

Make use of the websites that list freebies and giveaways by listing what you are offering on these sites. For instance, if you?re giving away an e-zine, you should submit this to as many specific e-zine directories as you can find. There are several directories for e-books, dictionaries, and other helpful materials.

The key to a successful Internet marketing strategy is to write unique quality content. This is even more important if your business sells the same goods as many other sites, especially if you all use identical product descriptions from the manufacturer. Providing your own unique descriptions of products and using rich, descripyive adjectives will help your site stand out and be recognizable.

TIP! Be sure to incorporate the use of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites in your Internet marketing strategy. Since they provide a quick and simple way to send promotions or updated site information, social media sites are an effective way to stay in touch with potential customers.

Run a contest or special promotion to generate site traffic. You may offer a day or more sale on a $1 e-book. When people see this limited time deal, they will likely buy and stick around your site. Many times these visitors will leave not only with their promotional item, but with a variety of the other products you sell as well.

A good technique to use with your Online marketing is to offer a discount for customers who make a purchase over a specified amount. For instance, you could extend to your customers a ten percent off discount on all purchases of $200 or more. This is a good way to get your customers to buy more of your products.

Internet promotion should not be very complicated but rather strive to make it simple. Try one or more of the tips provided in this article to improve your online presence and market your business to your targeted customer base quickly and efficiently. For customers who live in the electronic age, you can use Internet marketing to increase your bottom line

TIP! Make sure your website covers all the little things, as well as the big. The title of your site should be at the top right corner of every page along with a brief description of the site.

Felix Baumgartner successfully lands after highest freefall from edge of space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday (Oct. 14, 2012) after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,342.8 km/h (Mach 1.24) jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed Sunday morning a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

Baumgartner landed safely with his parachute in the desert of New Mexico after jumping out of his space capsule at 39,045 meters and plunging back towards earth, hitting a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. Countless millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the Internet. At one point during his freefall Baumgartner appeared to spin rapidly, but he quickly re-gained control and moments later opened his parachute as members of the ground crew cheered and viewers around the world heaved a sigh of relief.

"It was an incredible up and down today, just like it's been with the whole project," a relieved Baumgartner said. "First we got off with a beautiful launch and then we had a bit of drama with a power supply issue to my visor. The exit was perfect but then I started spinning slowly. I thought I'd just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I'd lose consciousness. I didn't feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We'll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be."

Baumgartner and his team spent five years training and preparing for the mission that is designed to improve our scientific understanding of how the body copes with the extreme conditions at the edge of space.

Baumgartner had endured several weather-related delays before finally lifting off under bright blue skies and calm winds on Sunday morning. The Red Bull Stratos crew watching from Mission Control broke out into spontaneous applause when the balloon lifted off.

* The data on the records set by the jump are preliminary pending confirmation from the authorized governing bodies.

Sherry Perkins: A Tribute to Jack White

I'm a big Jack White fan. I love the man's creativity and musical ability. His shows constantly sell out, and when they don't, scalpers buy up the tickets and resell them for hundreds of dollars making it impossible to get one. Nevertheless, I still want to see him live one day. I play Blunderbuss all the time along with the Cold Mountain soundtrack. As a writer, I've written many things: articles, screenplays, flash fiction, and lots and lots of poetry. One poem is even based on Ada and Inman, characters from Charles Frazier's novel Cold Mountain and I even got permission from Third Man Records to use the music from Wayfaring Stranger to accompany the piece if I ever read it aloud at a poetry reading, which I haven't done YET! Earlier this year, I wrote another poem based on Jack's version of Great High Mountain, another piece from the Cold Mountain soundtrack. Like a giddy 14-year-old with a Justin Bieber crush, I mailed it to TMR as a donation. It may have ended up in the trash as far as I know, but what the hell. Here is the poem, hope you like it. (inspired by the song ?GreatHighMountain? written by Ralph Stanley and sung by Jack White) What is the mountain Jack White sings of in a song called ?GreatHighMountain,? the one he desperately longs to climb? The same one he falls down on his knees in front of and cries out, ?Lord, what must I do?? In his song, the mountain could be a representation of life.? (?The higher I got, the harder I climbed.?) Yes, for some, it could be life in general. But...what about those of us who think outside the box? For me, since I?m the only one I can truly speak for, the mountain represents... ?expression, creativity, writing, publishing. You see, I?ve always been a deep thinker, a hard feeler, and I?ve always known that I?m good at something.? We?re all good at something. Am I a good writer?? I?d like to think so. After all, nobody can write exactly like me, nor can I write like others. I don?t want to.? I?m not them, they?re not me. Furthermore, who is the ?sweet voice? he hears from ?the top of the mountain?? Is it God saying ?...put your hand in mine??? Whoever is speaking in his story, God, an angel, the voice gives him courage. Yet, in my story, the voice is always me.? It?s my inner strength when all seems lost and there?s nowhere to go but up.? It?s my grit, my guts, my voice urging me higher and higher up my mountain of expression and creativity. ????????? So what, if no one gets it.? So what, if my words are too plain for plain people.? Who cares if my ????? country slang clouds the meanings?? I don?t need your permission or validation to express myself, to climb my great high mountain. Expression, creativity, writing...inspirations come from everywhere, they come from nowhere.? Don?t be afraid to climb your mountain whatever it represents for you.? Because when you reach the top, and you will, it will all have been worth it.

Learn How to Preserve Biological Samples | ArticleBro.com

Biological research involves collection and preservation of a variety of biological samples. Samples are usually stored at specific temperate conditions to retain its properties.
Let?s take the instance of blood sample and analyze its preservation techniques.
    Blood Sample Storage
Blood is usually collected from human body using a finger prick or venipuncture to examine your health condition and various other medical researches. In normal diagnosis blood sample are examined immediately to avoid any alterations that may happen in the content during the passage of time. The maximum time it can stay at room temperature would be 48 hours. Normally diseases are detected through blood samples analysis before this time.
For large scale clinical research, blood is preserved in blood banks under cold storage. Blood banks are capable of storing store blood for about a week in their freezers. Samples are refrigerated to 4?C without any delay. And they are shipped in refrigerated packaging at 4?C.
    DNA based Storage
Utmost care is taken to conserve DNA based biological samples. Total information about the donor value and history are saved in the Bio bank. Biological samples for DNA tests are to protect from any kind of physical damage. Low temperature storages are usually used to preserve these kinds of samples. Gentra Puregene Blood Kit would be one of the recent techniques used to preserve the blood storage temperature to maintain DNA quantity and quality.
    Room Temperature Storage
Certain researches find the benefits of room temperature storage outweighing cold storage. In room temperature, biological samples tend to sustain more efficiently.
    Risks of Cold Storage
? Large amount of waste materials are generated due to cold storage and shipping
? Unnecessary expenditure when compared to room temperature storage.
? Power failure remains as a threat to samples and can lead to its degradation.
However, there are a lot of advanced technologies being invented to prevent the degradation of biological samples.

Sponsor Saturday with The Digital Scrapbook Teacher - Simple ...

Welcome back to our series of posts about our current sponsors. We?d like for you to get to know these women and their businesses better. These sponsors make possible the free content provided here on the blog.

Let?s meet Patty Debowski aka The Digital Scrapbook Teacher.

Patty was motivated to start her business while working on four different scrapbooks ? one for each of her three children and a fourth for the family. She simply didn?t have the time to create scrapbook pages with traditional supplies. After mastering Photoshop Elements on her own, she wrote Digital & Hybrid Scrapbooking & Card-Making. In 2011, Patty wrote Photoshop Elements Basics & Beyond, which covers photo editing, organizing photos and digital scrapbooking supplies, and digital scrapbooking. She?s packed a lot of information into this ?Bible of Digital Scrapbooking? after teaching hands-on classes at scrapbook conventions across the United States.

The Digital Scrapbook Teacher offers classes ??online, downloadable, hands on ??in addition to videos, the aforementioned book and digital scrapbooking products such as templates and kits. Patty teaches five different classes online at My Creative Classroom including one on Photo Organizing. As she says, ?If you don?t have a good system for organizing your photos you will waste a lot of time.?

I asked Patty how her scrapbooking style and goals have changed over the years. Patty now uses templates to speed up the process and focuses on the photos and journaling more than she did when she was a paper scrapbooker. In addition, she includes more journaling on her pages because she wants to remember the stories behind the photos. Many years ago Patty took a class at a scrapbook convention at which the teacher said something that has stayed with her ??if you only include photos on the page, you are saying that it only mattered how you looked in the photos, not how you felt.

Patty is generously offering Simple Scrapper readers a 20% discount on everything in her store?with the coupon code?Simple_Scrapper; offer expires October 22, 2012. Stay connected with Patty?through her free Photoshop Elements tips newsletter or via Facebook.

Alleged LG Nexus 4 reviewed by Belarusian tech site

LG Nexus 4 reviewed by Belarusian tech site

Well, the Belarusian tech site Onliner.by made waves yesterday by publishing the clearest photos yet of the alleged LG Nexus, the E960. Now the site has published a quick and dirty review of the unannounced phone, which may go down as one of the worst kept secrets in smartphone history. An editor at the site claims to have scored a prototype version of the handset, and as such, any judgements made should be taken with a grain of salt. There were plenty of bugs, including serious issues with Android Beam, which in our experience has never really worked as well as advertised anyway. This model also only comes packing 8GB of storage, which will most certainly change before launch given its lack of a microSD slot. The site found that both the screen and the 8-megapixel camera were a vast improvement over the Galaxy Nexus, however benchmarks showed that while it's quad-core Snapdragon outpaced last-year's Nexus, it didn't put up the staggering numbers many were expecting. For the complete review hit up the source.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
