Using the Garmin G6 for your golf game

Although the first thing you will notice is its small dimension. the Garmin G6 won't completely thrill you till you see what has actually been loaded into this little unit. Not just do you get the 2.6" touchscreen seen with previous units, you get it in a model that weighs just 3.4 ounces and can be found in at.8" thick.

This is the littlest color scheme display unit at this time. As with additional Garmin models, you get preloaded courses with no additional costs. You'll like exactly what this little gadget can do for your golf game.

All maps are full shade and offer course image information like that seen in larger tools. Format arcs are also in shade and they provide you a much better context of the design of the hole. All you have to do is touch a point on this map and it will inform you just how far away you are from that point and exactly how far that point is to the middle of the green. This is merely one function of this incredible little unit.

Your Garmin G6 comes prepared with a scorecard that can easily track club distance averages and stats. It additionally allows you to select from different scoring options. Two buttons have been added so you can quickly see the digital scorecard along with the shot measuring function and green view. Just what makes this different from other models is it can be kept in the pocket during shots without impacting your game. It has the form and function of larger models and yet stays with you at all times which golfers discover to be extremely helpful.

There are a couple of disadvantages to this gadget. Distance readings aren't put very well on the device. If you go to touch the display to figure out the distance to a target, your finger may shut out the reading. When you attempt to take a look at scorecards on the Garmin G6, you may experience a couple of minor bugs additionally. There is so much to advise this device though that you can effortlessly ignore these disadvantages. When you see just how your game enhances with the usage of this unit, you won't care about them at all.

Egypt charges former Mubarak ally with corruption

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's state news agency says prosecutors have charged one of deposed leader Hosni Mubarak's most trusted men with corruption.

MENA quoted a judicial official as saying on Wednesday that Safwat el-Sherif, Mubarak's minister of information for nearly two decades, illegally appropriated villas, lands and apartments originally owned by the state. The official said Sherif had also received gifts worth millions of Egyptian pounds from chief editors in the state media in return for keeping them in their positions.

The charges are the latest allegation to emerge about Mubarak's regime, whose reputation for corruption was one of the main drivers behind the uprising that forced him from power last year.

El-Sherif, the official says, will have to pay 600 million Egyptian pounds in fines ? nearly $100 million.

CPD Blog ? Blog Archive ? Let's keep the main thing the main thing.

Dr. John Copenhaver

Dr. John Copenhaver

In the next month, the CPD will wrap up its 40th Anniversary events. In the spirit of the celebration, we invited Dr. John Copenhaver, Director of the CPD?s Technical Assistance for Excellence in Special Education, to reflect on his career in the field.

Here?s his retrospective:

I was seventeen years old when my high school psychology class took a trip to what was then the state training school in American Fork, Utah.? It was 1964 and ?special? education was not very special.? Parents of children with severe disabilities were counseled by doctors and clergy to take their child to the state hospital saying, ?it will be better for them and your family.? Individuals with disabilities did not have the same civil rights as others.

I did volunteer work at the state hospital for the next three years and met a wonderful little girl by the name of Gail. She was five years old at the time.? Gail had severe physical and cognitive disabilities and she was placed at the hospital by her parents when she was just a baby.

I know it might sound funny, but even though Gail never uttered a word, we seemed to communicate on a different level. She smiled when I came to feed her. It was quite simple with Gail, it was a communication through heart and spirit.

I was able to get to know her mother and father. They encouraged me. She passed away at ten years and I was able to be part of the service. We visit her gravesite whenever we are in the area.

In those days, the state hospitals were overcrowded, lacking educational programs. They followed a medical model of treatment. The facilities were outdated and depressing. Residents lined the perimeter of the buildings in diapers, rocking back and forth with very little stimulation.

Because of Gail and others like her, I went on to the University to pursue a career in special education. No one in my family had ever attended or graduated from higher education.? I worked full time and went to school full time.? I couldn?t have done it without the support of my wife, Kathy, who went on to become a wonderful second grade teacher. I was determined to make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities.

The same year I began my special education journey, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed and outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, and religious minorities and women. About the time I graduated from college, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Education of All Handicapped Act (EHA) passed and opened public school buildings to all children with disabilities.

My first job in special education was in Elmo, Montana on the shores of Flathead Lake.? Elmo was on the Flathead and Salish Indian Reservation. Special education teachers in the state and throughout the country were provided training on the ?Individualized Education Program? (IEP). We invented how the IEP should work. I taught in special education classrooms for the next eighteen years in various school districts in Montana and helped develop over one thousand IEPs.? It was very gratifying to work with parents and children with disabilities. Each child was unique and valued. Between 1975-1990, it was all about physical access, procedural safeguards, and developing appropriate IEPs. During that time, I was blessed to serve as a special education teacher, school psychologist, and special education director.

In 1990, I took a leave of absence from my job in Montana for a position with Mountain Plains Regional Resource Center at Utah State University.? Dr. Glenn Latham was the director when I arrived. Since that time, I have experienced the great fortune of working with and providing technical assistance?or advice on how to enhance special education and meet its legal requirements?to numerous state special education directors across the country, including the BIE.? I have been at all 183 BIE schools in eighteen states.

From 1990-2012, special education started to change.? State complaint investigations and due process hearings increased, and attorneys became part of the educational landscape.? Accountability became a buzzword after the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004.? Every State in the country was required to submit a State Performance Plan (SPP) focused on 20 performance and compliance indicators.? Part C has 14 indicators.? Every February, the State is required to submit an annual performance report (APR) that reports the progress of each indicator. IDEA has created an accountability system that involves the IEP for the student, the SPP for the State, and the APR for the school district.? Data, accountability, disputes, and fiscal issues begin to overshadow the focus on the child and their IEP.

In the 1990s and before, the barriers were attitudes and discrimination. Today the barriers for special education are excessive regulations and bureaucracy. Data and accountability are important, but it has been carried to an extreme, at the expense of serving children.

Despite the challenges we currently face, there have been numerous accomplishments over the past thirty years in special education.

  • We now have a zero reject policy for children with disabilities in public schools;
  • Parents take an active role in their child?s special education program;
  • Children with disabilities are viewed as general education first;
  • The ?inclusion? movement has provided increased involvement in general education for children with disabilities;
  • We are using ?people first? language out of respect;
  • We have eliminated inappropriate language such as ?retardation?;
  • Infants and toddlers with disabilities now are entitled to services;
  • There is more accountability at the State and school district levels;
  • Response to Intervention (RtI) systems are getting to at-risk children earlier, before they are placed in special education.

I could go on with more accomplishments we should all be proud of, and continue our efforts to improve programs and services for children with disabilities. This effort should always include families and community.

As I move toward the end of my career, I hope the pendulum starts to swing back to a focus on each child and their IEP team, making sure to always keep the main thing the main thing ? children with disabilities and their unique needs.

Familiar music could help people with brain damage

Listening to a favourite song might boost the brain's ability to respond to other stimuli in people with disorders of consciousness.

Music has been shown to have a beneficial influence on cognitive process in healthy people and those who have brain damage. For example, daily music therapy can help to enhance cognitive recovery after a stroke.

Fabien Perrin at the University of Lyon, France, and colleagues recorded brain activity in four patients ? two in a coma, one in a minimally conscious state, and one in a vegetative state ? while they were read a list of people's names, including the subject's own name. The list was preceded either by the subject's favourite music ? chosen by family and friends ? or by "musical noise". One patient listened to The Eagles' Hotel California, another was played the Blues Brothers' Everybody Needs Somebody to Love. The team then repeated the experiment with ten healthy volunteers.

In all four patients, playing the music rather than musical noise enhanced the quality of the brain's subsequent response to their own name, bringing it closer to the brain response of the ten healthy volunteers to hearing their own name, whether or not it was preceded by music or musical noise. The work was presented at the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness meeting in Brighton, UK, last month.

Consciousness increase

Perrin has two theories about what's going on. "Listening to preferred music activates our autobiographical memory ? so it could make it easier for the subsequent perception of another autobiographical stimulus such as your name," he says. "Another hypothesis is that music enhances arousal or awareness, so maybe it temporarily increases consciousness and the discrimination of your name becomes easier."

"The familiar music might be causing an emotional arousal effect, and once [the patient with brain damage is] aroused, there is a small window that opens for increased communication and the brain responds to the name," suggests Carsten Finke, a neurologist at Charit? Medical School in Berlin, Germany, who was not involved in the study.

So is Perrin's music sparking some form of consciousness in the people with brain damage? "I've not come across any responses like this to music before and it's way too early to conclude that it has any therapeutic effects in these patients," says Adrian Owen at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada.

Perrin agrees that it's very early days. "We're showing that we can boost cerebral activity to obtain responses that are very similar to those obtained from healthy participants. It's in favour of enhancement of self-consciousness but we can't be sure."

But he says that confirming the results with more people could have direct implications on the sensory environment of patients in intensive care.

Boom! States that Are Growing Despite It All - My Debt Relief Plan

When you read the economic news these days, the last word you expect to see is ?boom.?

After all, we all know it?s tough out there. Unemployment is high, growth is slow, and companies all over the country seem reluctant to hire again and get the economy back on track.

But even if the national economic picture is somewhat gloomy, there's no reason that individual states can?t find success. In fact, there are a number of local successes that many Americans can be proud to talk about ? especially people who live in the states we?re listing here.

1) North Dakota

The national unemployment rate may not be a pretty picture, but in North Dakota the employment story is painting a very different picture indeed. In fact, in 2011, BusinessInsider.com quoted North Dakota?s unemployment rate at an astoundingly-low 3.9 percent. But that?s not all. A recent boom in the oil fields of the Bakken area in North Dakota has helped to lead an energy charge across the state that is keeping North Dakotans at work. North Dakota has been growing since 2002, so it?s no surprise that they?ve been able to weather the most recent economic turbulence.

2) Alaska

It may be geographically isolated from the rest of the United States, but when it comes to economic isolation from the rest of the country, maybe it?s not all so bad.?

That?s the case in Alaska, where the budget continues to be balanced, the energy sector continues to add jobs, and the AAA bond rating has kept the financial side of things nice and tidy.

3) Texas

The old saying ?everything?s bigger in Texas? also seems to apply to economic news, because Texas in 2011 had added almost half a million new jobs in the business and financial sector over the previous decade. Texas is managing to effectively do this in a variety of sectors across the board, including everything from energy to finance. Considering Texas is also a big exporter, it?s a state that?s well set up to handle financial calamity in the future as well as the present.

4) Oklahoma

For more local growth, just check out Texas? neighbor to the north, a state that is also adding plenty of jobs in the energy sector over the last decade. Oklahoma?s Quality Jobs program has also attracted some interest, as it rewards businesses that are able to both create and keep new jobs. Maybe that?s the type of program more states should be looking to add.

5) Wyoming

For Wyoming, it?s all been about natural resources and mining. In other words, Wyoming is another state that has been able to add a lot of energy-related jobs over the years because of what?s under the soil. This has been one of the hallmarks for growing states across the country, which goes to show that energy just may be where the economy overall is heading. Wyoming also has a number of other healthy financial factors working in its favor that makes it a potential destination to people looking to settle long-term.

These examples give hope for the future, as well as ideas for ways these types of successes might be replicated in other areas of the nation.

For your website to reach top ranks in results obtained from a search engine when online users look for information connected to your website or business, you must look for the right SEO article writing service.

The problem? Too many small business owners say,? They just can?t afford those high priced SEO companies to get their business some web traffic.? They feel comfortable doing it the old fashioned way they?ve always done it. Newspaper, TV, radio and Yellow Page ads seemed to get them enough business each year, so why jump on the small business internet band wagon?

The Small Business SEO series is a 3 component series that identifies and briefly explains the main factor components of an effective small business SEO campaign. Part 1 in this series relates to keyword research and monitoring methods. Parts 2 and 3 deal with on-page optimization of websites as well as off-page elements respectively.

The smaller internet keen suppliers do not have these expenses. They managing director could be the person you speak to when you place an enquiry. He may also be doing the website design and SEO for the company. Without all the extra overheads, these smaller better organised companies can offer you much lower prices and service. Some even deal directly with the Far Eastern manufacturers for their promotional merchandise cutting out the expensive middleman. How can the big companies compete? The answer is, many cannot.

Good SEO companies know more than just a few ways to capitalize and get the traffic to your company. There are so many ways to get traffic to your small business website that I could write a book about it, but I think enough ?experts? already have.

Some small businesses are afraid to invest in online optimisation. But those who take the time to find the right services and the right experts can see a dramatic increase in how much traffic their site gets and how many real leads or additional sales they start to receive. Depending on the type of business you have, the right SEO strategy could even help you put your business on autopilot.

Now everyone is eager to see an instant result which is not applicable when you get engaged in search engine optimization. Every day thousands of people search the Internet for businesses just like yours. Surveys show that over 85% of Internet users find new websites by using search engines. Unless your website appears prominently on major search engines like Google, Yahooetc, you can be sure those potential customers will go elsewhere for their products and services.

Nothing gets a business owner going than a little competition. It?s dead simple and I will help you understand just what precisely needs to be done.

Five Ways to Prepare Your Home-Based Business for a Power Outage

If you work from home, you?re in good company. A recent survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that one in five employed Americans do some or all their work at home. And a report by consultant IDC said that the number of home-based businesses and telecommuters will increase by more than 10% over the next four years.

For the increasing number of us who work at home, a power outage isn?t an inconvenience; it?s a threat to our livelihoods. With that in mind, here are five things you can do to help prepare your business for a power outage.

1. Back up Your Data Regularly
Can your home-based business survive the loss of critical files? If you lose power, you?re just a hard disk crash away from disaster. Protecting yourself is easy. You should regularly back up all important data to an external drive, NAS (network-attached storage) device, or on-line. There?s a strong argument for double back ups ? redundancy as additional insurance. And, of course, one set

How frequently should you back up? It depends on how much data you can afford to lose. Some data-driven businesses back up in real time. Others schedule automatic back ups at the EOD (end of day). Some just perform a back up every Friday or every month of back up data needs to be stored off-site or online.

2. Protect Your Electronics
A power outage ? think lightning, downed power lines, distribution issues ? is the most likely time for transient voltage, the spikes and surges that can fry or damage voltage-sensitive electronics. You really do need surge suppressors.

3. Prepare an Emergency Storm Kit
Think ahead and prepare for a power outage by packing a plastic bucket with all those ?I wish I had? items before the power goes out. Think flashlights, batteries and a first aid kit. You?ll also want protective gear like raincoats, gloves and goggles in case you need to remove debris. Large plastic freezer bags will keep important documents (including phone numbers and insurance info) dry. And a disposable camera can document damages for an insurance claim even if your cell phone is out of juice. Speaking of phones, consider including a land-line phone that doesn?t require power to function.

You might want big magic markers and paper or cardboard to write a note or sign. And, of course, duct tape for everything else. The bucket should have a secure lid to keep everything dry, and the bucket itself will come in handy if you need to transport water.

4. Have a Backup Power Plan
Will a portable generator be enough? Portable generators can deliver limited power for relatively short outages. But they?re well-suited for construction work, field work or recreation. A standby generator can offer a more comprehensive backup power solution for the devices your business relies on.

5. Business-Specific Requirements
How much power does your business need? That depends. A home-based tailor may only need power for a few lights and a sewing machine. A caterer with a commercial kitchen needs to refrigerate thousands of dollars of perishables. No matter your needs, a standby generator can supply power to the equipment your business relies on.

In spite of corporate expense reducing traits in the past couple of years, more and more businesses in a variety of businesses are buying onsite eating solutions due to their workers, with a mix of building new cafeteria facilities, employing completed chefs, and utilizing POS systems. The reasons for doing this differ as greatly while the food options and menu options offered, and range between increased efficiency to worker recruitment, retention and increased quality of life.In a deliberate attempt to attract personnel to onsite dinner, it?s not unusual for businesses to employ highly accomplished chefs with culinary degrees and cafe knowledge to work their cafeterias. Assigned with providing personnel with an enjoyable nourishment knowledge, these innovative cooks plan and make very appealing menus; which could include sets from convenience foods, sushi bars, made-to-order grills, and fresh local produce. No longer measured by price get a handle on measurements alone, these chefs measure success by the contribution rate in the business cafeteria. Completing a top contribution rate often involves an innovative menu, so employee don?t become uninterested in meal choices. A good POS program might help cafeteria management track income activity for each food and beverage merchandise, and make selection adjustments accordingly.Productivity is a major reason for investing in onsite cafeterias, espresso bars and snack places, as production increases when workers remain onsite to eat, in place of making the facility to get other available choices. When situated in a distant area, where making the center at mealtime is logistically not feasible; an organization may possibly elect to offer onsite food as a healthier option to vending machines and packed lunches. Some organizations place an emphasis on healthy eating, as healthy food helps employees remain healthy, which helps to improve productivity and reduce health care costs. Several POS systems have the ability to manage reduced pricing on healthy menu possibilities, further encouraging healthy eating choices.Speed and comfort is another essential element of the corporate food experience. Cashless payment practices and options are therefore becoming more sought after, generally with the power to present an employee badge as a form of payment at the point of purchase. Maintained through an of Sale System as both a worker payroll deduction to be deducted from a future pay check, or as a draw down declining harmony which will be pre-loaded in advance of making food and drink purchases; cashless transaction is recognized by employees at all levels as a valuable advantage and comfort. When workers can provide the marker they already carry as a type of payment, they no longer have the need to carry money or credit cards as they move about the facility. Often, this usefulness means the difference between obtaining the time to have a delicious and nourishing meal versus a missed lunch or break fast. Cashless fee also means an increase in put on food and beverage purchases, when the worker happens to possess only five pounds in their pocket that day.Cloud technology and POS application operating on a portable device such as for instance an iPad expands the capability of cashless payments to the outdoors, when external seating is definitely an choice in warm climates or in the spring and summertime. Mobility is becoming an increasingly standard component of retail POS technology, specially POS on an iPad for order taking. From the advanced industry to producers, and from small to large sized firms ? any company looking to boost employee gains, boost worker productivity, or offer quality onsite dinner encounters may turn to the company cafeteria; where POS process technology and flexibility through a POS iPad could make a chef?s vision for a tempting menu a fact.

Festival des Films du Monde: Coming back to the war

MONTREAL - The other day, Volker Schl?ndorff was trying to explain to his 20-year-old daughter why he keeps revisiting the Third Reich in his movies. Best known for The Tin Drum, his adaptation of G?nther Grass?s novel that got the Oscar for best foreign-language film in 1979, the veteran German director returned to the subject of Nazis and the Second World War in 1996 with The Ogre (starring John Malkovich) and again in 2004 with The Ninth Day, about a priest at Dachau.

His latest war movie is Calm at Sea (La mer ? l?aube), a 90-minute drama he made for French TV about the reprisal murder of 48 young Communist prisoners in occupied France in October 1941. Seen by over 1.7 million people in France and Germany when it aired last spring, the telefilm is being screened at the Festival des films du monde; Schl?ndorff flew in from Paris to present it Tuesday and give a ?master class? to fans; it screens again Wednesday and Thursday.

And there?s more Krieg to come. As Schl?ndorff revealed in a long conversation we had Monday after he and his wife, Angelica, checked into their hotel in Old Montreal, the director plans to start shooting another war drama next spring. It?s a feature film called Diplomacy, adapted from the French play by Cyril Gely, about the Germans? final days in Paris in August 1944, when army general Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered rather than disobey Hitler?s orders to dynamite the city.

?I tried to explain to my daughter why I find all this (Third Reich history) interesting, and of course the first reason is that it happened to my generation,? said Schl?ndorff, 73, who was born in Wiesbaden on March 31, 1939. ?If this had been some Roman war, or Alexander (the Great) in Asia, I might be just as interested, but since it happened to us it just hits a bit closer to home.

?The Second World War isn?t just something you can analyze historically or depict precisely. It?s also a field where you can explore extreme human situations, where you can explore evil,? Schl?ndorff continued. ?I think people?s interest in it will survive for a long, long time. And hopefully (interest in that war) won?t be replaced by another one.?

It still amazes him: ?How can the Nazis have done all that in 12 years? How was it all possible??

The moral choices people make in wartime or in a military environment have long fascinated Schl?ndorff, who began his career in France in the early 1960s as assistant director to filmmakers Louis Malle (on classics like Zazie dans le m?tro and Le feu follet), Alain Resnais (L?ann?e derni?re ? Marienbad) and Jean-Pierre Melville (L?on Morin, pr?tre). His own feature debut as a director, Young T?rless, in 1966, was set in an Austrian military academy in the early 1900s.

That film was an early benchmark of the New German Cinema movement, which he helped establish with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog and others. Schl?ndorff scored again with the 1975 terrorism drama The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (his first box-office hit, written and directed with his first wife, Margarethe von Trotta) and their 1976 follow-up, Coup de Gr?ce, about an aristocratic woman?s dalliance with Prussian soldiers in Latvia in 1919.

Schl?ndorff?s international fame peaked in 1979 with The Tin Drum, followed in 1981 by Circle of Deceit, shot in Lebanon with Bruno Ganz as a war correspondent. Schl?ndorff went on to work in Hollywood (Swann in Love, The Handmaid?s Tale, Voyager), adapted plays for TV (including Arthur Miller?s Death of a Salesman, starring Malkovich and Dustin Hoffman), staged operas (by Janacek, Henze and, most recently, Bizet), and, in a long break from filmmaking, ran the fabled Babelsberg Studio for six years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In between, he completed a pet project: a three-hour interview with his idol, legendary filmmaker Billy Wilder. First aired on BBC TV in 1992, it?s included as a bonus on the new British Blu-ray of Wilder?s 1945 drama The Lost Weekend; the disc is part of Eureka! Entertainment?s Masters of Cinema series. Schl?ndorff is travelling with a copy to give to a friend in New York, which he and his wife will visit after Montreal. His next film, Montauk, a modern adaptation of the 1975 novel by Swiss writer Max Frisch, is set there.

As someone who knew both Wilder and Miller, in the mid-1980s, Schl?ndorff is often asked what he knows ?from the inside? about Marilyn Monroe, who was Miller?s wife and Wilder?s star in the classic comedy Some Like it Hot. ?It was sometimes embarassing for me, going between the TV play with Miller and meeting Wilder in Hollywood: each would take me as his confidante and I?d get both sides of the story,? Schl?ndorff recalled.

?Arthur was still very resentful and said that Billy treated her badly and was so ruthless, and that?s why she lost her baby (when shooting wrapped in late 1958). And Billy said, ?How could I know she was pregnant? She didn?t tell anybody, and I?m not a nurse. We had a deal that she had to make a movie, and had I known (she was expecting) we couldn?t have done it, because no insurance would have covered her.? It must have been a nightmarish situation for all of them.?

A short, dapper man with rimless glasses and a moustache, a weakness for smoking cigarillos (despite having run many marathons), a big jade ring he bought from a Jewish jeweller in Tehran, and a deliberate, rather professorial way of speaking that?s punctuated by wry laughter, Schl?ndorff recounted that anecdote and many others in the hour we had at his hotel. Fighting jet lag, he and his wife later showed up for a late-night Goethe Institut cocktail reception for the many other German filmmakers who are at the fest (three have films in world competition).

Schl?ndorff has been coming here for years, since the very first days of the fest in the mid-1970s, when founding president Serge Losique used to take him jogging on Mount Royal. As a francophile, he feels at home in Montreal but finds he hears more and more English in the streets every time he comes. He?s never shot a film here, though Margaret Atwood tempted him to do so for his adaptation of The Handmaid?s Tale in 1990 (he chose the leafy campus of North Carolina?s Duke University instead).

In another little-known Canadian connection, he once had an aunt who lived in Calgary (a doctor, she had to settle for a career as a nurse after she immigrated), but she?s dead now and he no longer visits. Approaching old age himself, he doesn?t lack energy ? in fact, he says he?s glad to be free of ?distractions? that keep him from making movies, whether they be low-budget ones for huge TV audiences like Calm at Sea, or big-budget ones for the cinema that are seen by ?a few thousand people? at film fests.

His best work is widely available on DVD. The premium art-house movie distributor Criterion is preparing to re-release The Tin Drum with an extra 25 minutes of footage restored, bringing the movie to its original intended length (in the script and as shot and edited) of almost two hours and 45 minutes. Criterion wants Schl?ndorff to do a new audio commentary for the film, but he?d rather do an on-camera interview; he?s never liked the ?voice of God? format of commentary tracks.

?I?m basically bored by everything except filmmaking, or working with actors, doing plays, movies, and operas; I do documentaries, as well ? anything where I can tell stories,? Schl?ndorff said.

?At my age, I?m back to the old fashion of the showbiz professional. You can send me anywhere and I can wage any battle.?

La mer ? l?aube (Calm at Sea) screens again Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and Thursday at 2:20 p.m. at Quartier Latin, 350 Emery (just west of St. Denis St. The 90-minute telefilm is in French and German with English subtitles.Tickets: $10. Info: ffm-montreal.org

Attorney appeals 2-year jail sentences for 3 Pussy Riot band members in Russia

MOSCOW - An attorney for three members of the Pussy Riot punk band says she has appealed the verdict of a Moscow court that sentenced the women to two years each in jail.

The women were put on trial after performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral in which they called on the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from its leader, Vladimir Putin.

Lawyer Violetta Volkova said the appeal was submitted to the Khamovniki district court Monday.

The punk rockers' trial caused an international furor, and celebrities including Paul McCartney, Madonna and Peter Gabriel have called for the women to be freed.

The pursuit of the band members has further highlighted the Kremlin's spiraling crackdown on the opposition and critics since Putin returned to presidency in May.

Syrian helicopter crashes under fire in Damascus

AMMAN/ALEPPO (Reuters) - A Syrian military helicopter crashed in flames under rebel fire in Damascus on Monday, and a government warplane fired rockets at targets on the capital's outskirts for what rebels said was the first time.

The focus of fighting appears to have returned to the outskirts of capital after weeks of battles centered on the northern city of Aleppo.

Opposition activists said at least 62 people had been killed in the assault on suburbs of Damascus on Monday, some summarily executed, a day after they accused Assad's troops and sectarian militia of massacring hundreds of people in the neighboring town of Daraya.

At the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the Daraya killings as "an appalling and brutal crime" that should be independently investigated immediately.

State television confirmed a helicopter had crashed in Damascus but gave no details. Opposition activists said rebels had shot it down; opposition video footage showed a crippled aircraft burning up and crashing into a built-up area, sending up a pillar of oily black smoke.

The possible shooting down of the helicopter, the latest of several such successes claimed by lightly-armed rebel fighters, bolstered morale in their 17-month struggle battle to bring down Assad. However, even more intense army bombardments followed the helicopter crash, witnesses said.

"It was flying over the eastern part of the city and firing all morning," an activist calling himself Abu Bakr told Reuters from near where the helicopter came down in the eastern suburbs. "The rebels had been trying to hit it for about an hour," he said. "Finally they did."

Video footage carried the sound of people celebrating the helicopter's dive with shouts of "Allahu akbar" (God is great).

Although rebel commanders have asked foreign governments for anti-aircraft missiles, Western nations are unwilling to supply such weapons for fear of them falling into hostile hands. There was no indication fighters in Damascus had used any missiles.

Later footage showed a fighter jet swooping on a built-up area. An explosion is heard and a voice says: "It is firing rockets." Activists said it had struck targets on the eastern outskirts of the capital.

"This is the first time a warplane strikes the edges of Damascus," a Damascus-based activist told Reuters by Skype. "This plane was swooping over the area all afternoon."

"SUMMARY EXECUTIONS"

Activists said 11 of Monday's dead were killed in the district of Jobar, where the helicopter came down. Five of the Jobar victims had been captured and summarily executed by security forces, and the others died when their homes were hit.

Syrian authorities have banned entry to most foreign media, making it impossible to verify accounts by activists and residents of activity in the capital.

Army helicopters had been rocketing and strafing crowded working class suburbs on the eastern outskirts of the city since Sunday. "The sound of gunfire and mortar shells exploding hasn't stopped," an opposition activist, Samir al-Shami, said from the area. "I see smoke rising everywhere."

Video from campaigners showed 20 bodies on the floor of a mosque, including three children.

On Sunday, opposition activists said they had found about 320 bodies, including some of women and children, in Daraya, just southwest of Damascus. Most had been killed execution-style, they said. Videos on the Internet showed rows of bodies wrapped in sheets. Most seemed to be young men, but at least one video showed several children who appeared to have been shot in the head. The body of one toddler was soaked in blood.

At the United Nations, Ban demanded an investigation.

"The secretary-general is certainly shocked by those reports and he strongly condemns this appalling and brutal crime," Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky said. "This needs to be investigated immediately, in an independent and impartial fashion."

HIGHEST DAILY TOLL

The uprising, which began as peaceful protests, has become a civil war. U.N. investigators have accused both sides of war crimes but laid more blame on government troops and pro-government militia than on the rebels.

The killings in Daraya, a working class Sunni Muslim town that sustained three days of bombardment before being overrun by the army on Friday, pushed the daily death toll to 440 people on Saturday, one of the highest since the uprising began, an activist network called the Local Coordination Committees said.

The official state news agency said: "Our heroic armed forces cleansed Daraya from remnants of armed terrorist groups who committed crimes against the sons of the town."

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande warned Assad that any use of chemical weapons would be a legitimate justification for military intervention. The United States and Britain have made similar warnings.

"With our partners we remain very vigilant regarding preventing the use of chemical weapons, which for the international community would be a legitimate reason for direct intervention," Hollande said in a speech.

Clashes are raging across Syria as the rebellion grows increasingly bloody, particularly in Aleppo, Syria's biggest city and its economic hub, where the army and rebels appear stuck in a war of attrition.

Fighting in the northern city on Sunday was the heaviest in the past week, according to Reuters journalists there. Helicopters were circling and firing occasionally on Monday.

Reuters journalists saw a fighter jet fire on an eastern neighborhood of the city for two hours. Activists said southern districts of Aleppo were also repeatedly attacked on Monday.

"The front line has not changed. We cannot progress due to a lack of ammunition," said Abu Walid, a rebel commander in Aleppo. "All we can do is hold our positions."

Rebels say they control at least half the city of 2.5 million, but their hold is fragile since Assad's forces can unleash their air power and artillery.

The United Nations says more than 18,000 people have been killed in the conflict that pits a mainly Sunni opposition against a ruling system dominated by the Assad family and other members of the Alawite faith, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Diplomatic efforts to stop the violence in Syria are stalled by a stalemate between Western countries, Sunni-led Gulf Arab states and Turkey - which all support the opposition - and Shi'ite Iran, which backs Assad, as do Russia and China.

In Ankara, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called for more help from other countries with a growing Syrian refugee crisis and said Ankara would stress this at a U.N. Security Council meeting on Syria later this week.

The number of Syrian refugees in Turkey has nearly doubled over the past two months to more than 80,000 and Turkey has begun temporarily holding thousands of people on the border while they scrambled to erect shelters.

"On the one hand, for the sake of our brotherhood with the Syrians we want to carry out our humanitarian duty, but there is a burden brought about by the numbers. This burden must be shared by the international community," Davutoglu said.

Ron Paul Rallies Supporters Ahead of GOP Convention

TAMPA, Fla. - Rep. Ron Paul might have fallen short in his bid for the presidency, but this afternoon the libertarian leaning Texas congressman proclaimed his "liberty movement" alive and well.

Paul took center stage at his "We Are the Future" rally at the University of South Florida.

Animated and witty, he stuck to the message of limited government, the central theme of his presidential bid and a message he has been delivering all of his life.

"We want to get the government out of the business it's not supposed to be doing," Paul said.

Paul's rally sometimes resembled a rock concert. Fans wearing shirts with his name and image stood under colorful lights drinking tap beer and listened to Blues Traveler frontman John Popper perform ahead of Paul's remarks.

Many carried signs and shouted for the elimination of the I.R.S. and the Federal Reserve banking system

In an otherwise highly scripted week for the party, the event on the eve of the kickoff of the Republicans' nominating convention, was seen as an unpredictable.

Paul ended active campaigning in June and unlike most of his GOP rivals, hasn't endorsed Mitt Romney's candidacy. He told The New York Times for a story Sunday that he was denied a chance to speak because he refused to let the Romney campaign vet his remarks and give an unconditional endorsement.

Paul didn't win a single state during his bid for the presidency, but still amassed more than 150 delegates to the convention.

Paul's coalition is made up of anti-war Republicans, people who want stricter government adherence to the Constitution and those who want to dismantle the Federal Reserve.

Paul encouraged his supporters to continue until their views are the GOP mainstream.

"Believe me, we will get in the tent because we will become the tent eventually," he said. "With the energy that we have, it seems to me they would be begging and pleading for us to come into the party."

Paul, 77, is leaving Congress after his 12th term expires at year's end. He will be honored Tuesday night in a video tribute at the convention. The RNC also amended the party's platform to include policy provisions Paul has advocated for, such as an audit of the Federal Reserve.

Despite the conciliatory gestures, some of Paul's ardent supports believe the Republican Party is marginalizing him.

"It's nice they're doing a tribute, but it doesn't change my opinion of them," said Susie Mann, 55, of Columbus, Ohio. "Let the man speak."
