(AP) ? Hundreds of Occupy Los Angeles protesters showed no sign they planned to move Sunday ahead of a city-imposed midnight deadline to abandon their encampment, saying they would instead hold an "eviction block party."

Although city officials have told demonstrators they must leave the weeks-old protest site and take their nearly 500 tents with them by 12:01 a.m. Monday, just a handful were seen packing up Sunday.

Instead, some passed out fliers containing the city seal and the words: "By order of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, this notice terminates your tenancy and requires you to attend the Occupy L.A. Eviction Block Party."

"The best way to keep a non-violent movement non-violent is to throw a party, and keep it festive and atmospheric," said Brian Masterson as he helped a friend break down her tent. "And I'm going to be doing as much as I can to stop violence."

He said he had turned his own tent into a "non-violent booby trap" by filling it with sandbags to make it tough to tear down.

"We can't beat the LAPD, but we can make it difficult for them to do their job, and have fun while we're doing it," Masterson said.

Villaraigosa issued a statement a few hours before the deadline Sunday night, outlining the city's plan and his hopes for a "spirit of cooperation."

He said that even after the park's official closure police "will allow campers ample time to remove their belongings peacefully and without disruption."

Villaraigosa said police and social workers will walk through the park handing out information on the closure and services available.

The mayor did not say what tactics authorities would use for those who refuse to leave ? or when they will begin using them.

The atmosphere was already festive Sunday afternoon. A punk-pop band played protest songs on one of the lawns. The protest's artists were out in great numbers showing their work, and twice the usual number of news trucks surrounded the tent city.

Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart drew a crowd as he stood on the City Hall steps and argued with protesters on topics like Bank of America and Warren Buffett.

Some campers packed up their tents and belongings Sunday to avoid police trouble, but said they intended to return without them in support of their fellow protesters.

"I would prefer not to take the tent down," said Tiffany Wallace as she packed up her campsite. "But we need to be strategic for this movement to last. This is not just for the occupation of this particular location. This is for mobilizing working class people nationally and internationally."

Digital fliers were being posted on Facebook and Twitter encouraging people to go to City Hall at midnight in solidarity with occupiers.

City Councilman Bill Rosendahl appeared on the City Hall lawn to issue a late plea for protesters to leave.

Occupy organizers said thanks, but no thanks.

"Until the grievances of the 99 percent are addressed to end corporate control of the system, the government and the media, Occupy LA will be here exercising our 1st Amendment rights," Julie Levine, one of several Occupy spokespeople, told the Los Angeles Times.

Police, for their part, have said little about what tactic they would take if protesters ignore the deadline.

Chief Charlie Beck has told reporters that officers would not be sweeping through the camp and arresting everyone the minute the clock ticks past midnight.

But in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that was published Sunday, Beck indicated he expects that arrests will become inevitable at some point.

"I have no illusions that everybody is going to leave," Beck said. "We anticipate that we will have to make arrests."

When it comes to that, he said, police officers "will not be the first ones to apply force."

Meanwhile, local clergy and labor leaders implored both sides to ensure that the 2-month-old demonstration remain peaceful.

"We are grateful to the Occupy movement for refocusing the country to the issue of income inequality," Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary and treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, said in a statement issued Sunday.

"We call for nonviolence in all acts of civil disobedience by Occupy LA and in professional procedures by the LAPD. We are committed to a long-term movement from the 99 percent to hold Wall Street and the banks accountable for devastating our economy," Durazo added.

Villaraigosa has expressed admiration that, at least so far, the Occupy Los Angeles movement has remained peaceful, unlike those in some other cities around the country.

But while the mayor, a former labor organizer himself, has said he sympathizes with the movement, he added it's time to close the encampment of some 500 tents that dot the lawn in front of City Hall for the sake of public health and safety.

The 2-month-old movement is also at a crossroads, Villaraigosa said, and must "move from holding a particular patch of park to spreading the message of economic justice."

Brilliant. Your wary, I suppose I can understand why. To be quite honest I would like to here your first take on the introduction. When you were reading it did any ideas or presumptions about the plot spring to mind?

I don't mean to jump on you at all I'd just like to gain your thoughts before I feed you my own, you never know they could be different.

Well first, I don't mind a story that is...open like this is. I like the freedom, it seems character driven, also good. I read the description and it does seem like an interesting premise. What I was wondering was how much input are you looking for, since you said this was already an ongoing story. I would assume facts like places and perhaps mythos is already covered. What sort of role does this mysterious man fulfil? Is that open-ended as well? I would like to have an exchange with you as to see if your style and mine, meshes. Otherwise there is very little point in going at this guns blazing.

I agree it would be a good idea to exchange however...now may not be the best time on my behalf. I live in england, it's late and I have work in the morning. I wouldn't want to give you some limp paragraph that I've done whilst my eyes are partially shut!

This is very open as I wouldn't like to influence you too much with what I've already written. I'll gladly give you a more detailed insight in to what I've already sorted out but could it be tomorrow? I just wanted to see how much interest this gathered tonight.

Attorney says suit planned in FAMU band death

(AP) ? The family of a Florida A&M University drum major who died in what authorities suspect was a hazing incident will sue the school, an attorney said Friday.

The family of Robert Champion, 26, is spending the holiday weekend planning Champion's funeral, attorney Christopher Chestnut said.

The Atlanta resident was found on a bus parked outside an Orlando hotel Saturday night after the school's football team lost to rival Bethune-Cookman. Police said Champion had been vomiting and complained he couldn't breathe shortly before he collapsed.

The cause of Champion's death hasn't been determined. Preliminary autopsy results were inconclusive and a spokeswoman with the Orange County medical examiner's office said it could take up to three months to learn exactly what killed him.

Law enforcement officials have said they believe some form of hazing took place before 911 was called. Chestnut said he also believes the injuries Champion sustained were consistent with hazing.

A spokesman for the school, which was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, could not be immediately reached for comment Friday morning.

In Florida, any death involving hazing is a third-degree felony.

The fallout from Champion's death was immediate. On Tuesday, the school shuttered the famed marching band and the rest of the music department's performances. The next day, longtime band director Julian White was fired. And Florida Gov. Rick Scott said state investigators would join the probe and the college announced an independent review led by a former state attorney general.

Chestnut said Champion's distraught family believes the actions are "too little, too late."

Champion, a clarinet player, had recently been named drum major.

"He had worked all of his life to reach that goal and it ultimately cost him his life," Chestnut said.

The attorney said Champion's family hopes a lawsuit against the school will help raise awareness about the issue of band hazing.

"This is not an isolated incident," Chestnut said.

Hazing cases have cropped up in marching bands, especially at historically black colleges where a spot in the marching band is coveted. In many cases the bands are revered almost as much as the sports teams for which they play.

In 2008, two first-year French horn players in Southern University's marching band were hospitalized after a beating. In 2009, 20 members of Jackson State University's band were suspended over hazing accusations.

There have been numerous incidents at FAMU. In 2001, Marcus Parker suffered kidney damage after being beaten by a paddle.

Three years earlier, Ivery Luckey, a clarinet player from Ocala, Fla., said he was padded about 300 times, sending him to the hospital. He said he was emotionally and physically scarred. Some 20 band members were suspended and Luckey filed a lawsuit against the state Board of Regents. Reports indicate he settled for $50,000.

Lions slam Suh, says conduct was "unacceptable" (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Detroit Lions have censured defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for his conduct against Green Bay on Thursday, while the player himself apologized for his "unacceptable" behavior.

Suh was ejected from the game after he became entangled with Green Bay lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith, pushed his opponent's helmet into the turf and then stomped on his arm when he got to his feet.

The reigning NFL defensive rookie of the year has been fined three times for roughing up quarterbacks in less than a year, the latest coming in August when he grabbed Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and threw him to the ground after he had got rid of the ball during a preseason game.

"The on-field conduct exhibited by Ndamukong Suh that led to his ejection from yesterday's game was unacceptable and failed to meet the level of sportsmanship we expect from our players," the team said in their statement.

After the game, which Detroit lost 27-15, Suh denied he had done anything wrong and said he had been trying to regain his balance after getting entangled with Dietrich-Smith.

However, he was apologetic in his statement posted on the team's website on Friday.

"In the past few hours, I have had time to reflect on yesterday's game and I want to sincerely apologize for letting my team mates down, the organization, and especially to my fans, who look to me for positive inspiration," Suh said.

"My reaction on Thursday was unacceptable. I made a mistake, and have learned from it. I hope to direct the focus back to the task at hand -- by winning."

Suh could be in line for a substantial fine and suspension after a review of the incident by the league on Tuesday. (Reporting by Mike Mouat in Windsor, Ontario; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

S&P: Euro recession would threaten bloc's ratings (Reuters)

DUBLIN (Reuters) ? Standard & Poor's warned on Wednesday that credit ratings in the euro zone could come under renewed pressure if large parts of the currency bloc slip back into recession, as expected, next year.

David Beers, the global head of sovereign ratings at S&P, also said on Wednesday he expected the European Central Bank (ECB) and euro zone governments to come to some sort of accommodation on how to resolve the spiraling sovereign debt crisis.

"With so much at stake, one would expect that some accommodation can be found between euro zone monetary authorities and national policy makers that balances substantive government policy actions with more aggressive steps by the ECB to counter a renewed economic downturn," Beers said in a speech in Dublin.

"Such steps of course would entail closer policy coordination and a redoubled political commitment at the euro group and EU levels."

The ECB is under growing pressure from world leaders to do more to address a debt crisis that has reached the core of the 17-country euro zone. German opposition is preventing the ECB from being potentially tapped as a lender of last resort.

But Beers said Germany's perceptions of how to deal with the crisis may change after a rise in its own borrowing costs.

"It's quite telling that there has been upward pressure on yields in Germany - it might begin to change perceptions in Germany," he said.

The German central bank was forced to buy large amounts of bonds at an auction on Wednesday, in one of its worst bond sales since the launch of the euro.

DOWNWARD PRESSURE ON RATINGS

Beers warned that recession in large parts of the euro zone may be difficult to avoid next year if yields on sovereign bonds remain elevated and bank balance sheets continue to contract.

The euro zone's private sector contracted for a third month in November and purchasing manager surveys on Wednesday pointed to the euro zone economy shrinking 0.5-0.6 percent in the fourth quarter after 0.2 percent growth in the third quarter.

"The financial dynamics unleashed by the ongoing confidence crisis, in Standard & Poor's view, have heightened the risk of renewed recession in a growing number of euro zone members that potentially could put additional downward pressure on (the) euro area's sovereign ratings," said Beers.

"This risk, I regret to say, looks unlikely to diminish quickly."

"As and when a broad-based recovery takes hold in the euro zone, past experience suggests that the pace of economic growth will underperform relative to past trends."

Further cuts to euro area debt ratings would further increase the countries' borrowing costs, further complicating the bloc's efforts to extricate itself from a prolonged crisis.

France is currently at risk from losing its coveted AAA status after Moody's rating agency warned on Monday that a sustained rise in its debt yields coupled with weakening economic growth could harm its ratings outlook.

O Christmas tree, how costly are your branches (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? One Tokyo Christmas tree has a special glow even amid the global economic gloom -- it's made of pure gold, and valued at $2 million.

A jewelry store in Tokyo's posh Ginza district teamed up with flower arrangement artist Shogo Kariyazaki to create the lavish Golden Christmas Tree.

Twelve kg (26 lb) of gold were used to make the 2.4 meter (8 foot) tree, which is adorned with ribbons, hearts and orchids, also made of gold.

The value of the gold is about $700,000 but the total value of the tree is much higher because of labor costs, said Naoto Mizuki, marketing general manager at the store.

"Considering the time it took to make, the designer and hard work put into it, we can assume that the cost of this tree would be approximately 150 million yen ($2 million)," he said.

The gleaming display caught the eyes of passersby.

"When you're looking at the tree, it really jumps out at you," said window-shopping housewife Kisoko Sakabe.

The tree is not for sale.

It will be on display at the store through to Christmas Day.

Watered-down soup sales hurt Campbell (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Campbell Soup Co (CPB.N), the world's largest soup maker, reported weak quarterly sales as higher prices at its U.S. soup and international businesses put off price-conscious shoppers, sending its shares down 5 percent.

The company, whose U.S. soup business has struggled with more competition, said quarterly sales in that business fell 4 percent, hurt by higher promotional spending by rivals, while sales in its international business decreased 3 percent.

Campbell, which named Denise Morrison as its new chief executive in June, has cut jobs and promotional spending and quit the Russian market to boost earnings.

In the first quarter, the company reported a higher-than-expected profit, helped by a lower advertising and promotion expenses, and stood by its forecast for the fiscal year.

Campbell, which also makes V-8 juice drinks and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers, began advertising later than usual "to be more closely aligned with the start of the soup season."

"We consider the quality of this quarter's earnings to be low," said KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Akshay Jagdale.

For the quarter ended October 30, net earnings attributable to Campbell Soup were $265 million, down from $279 million a year earlier. Per share earnings were unchanged at 82 cents due to a decline in outstanding shares.

Sales fell 1 percent to $2.16 billion.

Analysts on average were expecting a profit of 79 cents a share on sales of $2.21 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Marketing and selling expenses fell 6 percent to $261 million.

Campbell expects fiscal 2012 adjusted earnings per share to fall 5 to 7 percent, with sales flat to up 2 percent.

Shares of the company were down 5 percent at $31.85 on Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.

News Corp Accused Of Trying To Bribe Former Australian Senator

CANBERRA, Australia -- Australian police said Wednesday they are investigating a former senator's allegations that a News Corp. executive offered him favorable newspaper coverage and "a special relationship" in return for voting against government legislation.

Former Sen. Bill O'Chee recently made the allegations in a nine-page statement to police and they were published Wednesday by Fairfax Media newspapers, rivals of News Corp. in Australia.

The newspapers reported that an unnamed executive of News Corp.'s Australian subsidiary, News Ltd., asked O'Chee during a lunch on June 13, 1998, to vote against his conservative government's legislation on the creation of digital TV in Australia. News Corp. stood to profit from the legislation failing.

Australian Federal Police said in a statement Wednesday that O'Chee's allegations had been under investigation since Nov. 4.

"As this matter is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment any further," the statement said.

Offering a senator a bribe or inducement to influence a vote is an offense punishable by up to six months in prison.

O'Chee did not return an Associated Press phone call Wednesday. A News Ltd. spokesman also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The allegations are embarrassing for News Corp., whose ownership of 70 percent of Australia's newspapers has raised criticisms from within the government that Rupert Murdoch's empire has too much control over Australian media.

The government has opened an inquiry into potentially increasing newspaper regulation in Australia after News Corp. closed its top-selling British tabloid News of the World in July over illegal phone hacking allegations.

O'Chee had been discussing that inquiry with an unnamed Australian lawmaker at an Australian airport recently when he mentioned his allegations against the executive, Fairfax media reported. The allegations were then referred to police.

O'Chee, a former senator for Queensland state with a track record of voting against his National Party's wishes, alleged that the executive told him that while voting against the legislation would be criticized, "we will take care of you."

The executive "also told me we would have a 'special relationship,' where I would have editorial support from News Corp.'s newspapers, not only with respect to the ... legislation, but for 'any other issues' too," O'Chee reportedly told police in his statement.

"I believed that (he) was clearly implying that News Corp. would run news stories or editorial content concerning any issue I wanted if I was to cross the floor and oppose the ... legislation," he added.

O'Chee said that a week after the lunch, he called the executive to say he had decided to vote for the legislation.

"After this conversation, it became almost impossible for me to get anything published in the Queensland newspapers which News Corp. controlled, even though I had been able to do so before the lunch meeting," O'Chee reportedly said in his statement.

He lost his Senate seat at elections four months after the lunch.

Meditation Can 'Turn Off' Regions of the Brain (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Nov. 22 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that people skilled at meditation seem able to turn off areas of the brain associated with daydreaming and psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia.

Learning more about how meditation works could help advance research into a number of diseases, according to lead author Dr. Judson Brewer, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University.

He and his colleagues used functional MRI to assess brain activity in experienced and novice meditators as they performed three different meditation techniques.

Regardless of the type of meditation, skilled meditators had decreased activity in the brain's default mode network, which has been linked to attention lapses and disorders such as anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and the buildup of beta amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers also found that when the default mode network (which consists of the medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex) was active, brain regions associated with self-monitoring and cognitive control were also activated in experienced meditators, but not novices.

This suggests that skilled meditators constantly monitor and suppress the emergence of "me" thoughts and mind wandering. If they become too strong, these two states of mind are associated with diseases such as autism and schizophrenia.

The experienced meditators were able to co-activate the two brain regions both during meditation and while resting, which suggests they have developed a "new" default mode that's more present-centered and less self-centered, the researchers said.

"Meditation's ability to help people stay in the moment has been part of philosophical and contemplative practices for thousands of years," Brewer said in a Yale news release. "Conversely, the hallmark of many forms of mental illness is a preoccupation with one's own thoughts, a condition meditation seems to affect. This gives us some nice cues as to the neural mechanisms of how it might be working clinically."

The study appears Nov. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Best Muppets are the underrated ones

Disney

In "The Muppets," Gonzo the Great has become a plumbing mogul.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Sure, I love Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, and they're featured prominently in the new "Muppets" movie. But some of my favorite Muppets are the underrated ones, the supporting cast. Here's a look at a few of the often-overlooked stars of the show.

Statler and Waldorf
The?top?pair has to be Statler and Waldorf, the crotchety old?critics who sit in an opera box and heckle "The Muppet Show" as it happens. They vaguely resemble an elderly Siskel and Ebert,?and Milton Berle once dubbed them "Starsky and Crutch." Snapped Berle, "I'd like to see you come down here and be funny." "You first!" was the response. They're even?featured in the theme song, singing "Why do we always come here? I guess we'll never know. It's like a kind of torture, to have to watch this show."

Beaker
Poor Beaker.?Kermit is chased around by Miss Piggy, Gonzo is shot out of cannons, but no one suffers more than Dr. Bunsen Honeydew's carrot-topped lab assistant.?He's had bananas shot at him, been multiplied in a giant copier machine,?had his hair shot off with hair-growing tonic, been shrunken to a tiny size, made to eat edible paperclips and otherwise tormented by his clueless boss. If his many tortured "Meeps!" sound?familiar, it may be because his voice was provided by Richard Hunt, who also often did Miss Piggy's voice.?

The Swedish Chef
Even before Food Network, the Swedish Chef was cooking up trouble. His recipes always include throwing exploding pots and ladles, using threatening utensils (chainsaws, battleaxes) and singing in a cheerful slurry of Scandinavian and Muppet. Since so many Muppets are animals and vegetables, the Chef was always trying to drag one or more of them into his recipe, to much googly-eyed resistance.?The poor guy. Jamie Oliver never had to prepare food that fought back. Bork, bork, bork!

Rowlf the Dog
In the new "Muppets" movie, Kermit and pals drive around the country to collect all the other Muppets, showing only some of the meet-up scenes. "How come you didn't put me in the montage?"complains Rowlf, whining that he thought his scene was pretty exciting. The movie then flashes to Kermit discovering?Rowlf sacked out in a hammock. That's piano-playing Rowlf's personality right there -- he was one of the mellowest Muppets around, and even if chainsaws were flying and chickens squawking, he never got flustered. We could all use a little Rowlf.

Gonzo the Great
If you want to start a Muppet debate, just ask?a fan?what in the heck Gonzo was supposed to be. Even the show didn't know.? In "The Great Muppet Caper," when the Muppets go to Europe in boxes labeled with their species, Gonzo's box reads "Whatever." "He's a little like a turkey," Kermit once said, though one movie revealed him as a space alien. He has blue fur, feathers, a bendy nose, and a love for chickens and Evel Knievel-like stunts. Once he jumped his motorcycle into Statler and Waldorf's box. Another time he hypnotized himself and ended up being crushed under a 5,000-pound weight. And of course, in every episode, he showed up at the end of the "Muppet Show" theme song with his trumpet to hit the song's final note. His trumpet would alternately catch on fire, squirt water, blow up a balloon, explode, emit colorful smoke or even fly away on its own. This is what we call the Muppet Shooooooow!

Who (or what) is?your favorite Muppet? Tell us in the comments.

Royal Wedding Dress Fashion Face-Off: Kate Middleton vs. Blair Waldorf

Kate Middleton was dubbed the "People's Princess" earlier this year when she became the first commoner to marry an heir to the British throne in centuries.

On Gossip Girl, Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester) is getting ready to do the same on January 30, as she is engaged to Louis, the Prince of Monaco.

Meester was seen on the street filming in her wedding dress ... a runaway bride perhaps? Or filming a dream sequence? Impossible to say for another two months.

What you can say now is whether Gossip Girl fashion compares to the real deal! Whose wedding dress do you like better, Kate's or Blair's? Vote below!

DMV office in nation's capital offers HIV testing (AP)

WASHINGTON ? At one Department of Motor Vehicles' office in the nation's capital, motorists can get a driver's license, temporary tags and something wholly unrelated to the road: a free HIV test.

In a city with one of the highest percentages of residents living with HIV or AIDS, health officials have now test-driven the in-DMV testing and are finding that it works. So far, more than 5,000 people have been screened and gotten results while they wait.

Now officials are expanding the program, offering testing at an office where Washington residents register for food stamps, Medicaid and other government assistance. On Monday, the first day of the program, 60 people got tested, officials said. As an incentive they're being offered a $5 gift card to a local grocery store.

"You have to meet people where they are," explained Sheila Brockington, who oversees HIV testing at the DMV office in southeast Washington. "You're waiting anyway. You might as well."

The testing project, which began last October, isn't run by the DMV but instead by a nonprofit group, Family and Medical Counseling Service Inc., which uses an office inside the site. To ensure confidentiality, residents get tested and receive their results in the office, out of earshot of those going about their usual DMV business. The nonprofit got a $250,000 grant to do the testing and secured the support of the city's Health Department and the DMV. Now a second, similar grant is funding expansion.

Government statistics released in June show about 1.1 million Americans were living with the AIDS virus in 2008, and other studies show that about 10 percent to 20 percent of U.S. adults are tested annually. But those involved in HIV/AIDS work recognize that more needs to be done to identify people living with HIV, said Chris Collins, the vice president and director of public policy for amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research.

"We need to be looking for creative ways to reach people who haven't tested in the past," said Collins, who hasn't studied Washington's program but said innovation and creativity by cities is important.

In Washington, not everyone was sold on the idea when it was proposed by the head of the Family and Medical Counseling Service, Angela Wood. She came up with the idea after sitting at a DMV office herself. Initially, some officials doubted many people would test. Now, however, between 25 and 35 people get tested every day at the DMV location. Anyone who agrees gets $7 off their bill.

For those who test positive, the nonprofit offers a free ride to its nearby office where they can arrange counseling and an appointment with a doctor. So far, less than 1 percent of those screened have tested positive, though some already knew their status. That's below the city's infection rate of 3 percent.

By now, the four people who run the program at the DMV office have their pitch for testing down. When people are on line, one of the testers approaches with the offer: free tests, money off your bill, and the promise that it won't hurt.

"We don't do blood. We do swabs," tester Karen Johnson tells patrons, explaining that the test of their saliva takes 20 minutes and that participants will not lose their place in the DMV line.

For patrons, the offer is generally a surprise, but not an unwelcome one.

Bus driver Nat Jordan, 35, was at the DMV office one day to get his car registered. He said he accepted because he gets tested once a year anyway. Colleen Russell, 28, a newly married nurse who was at the DMV to change her name on her driver's license, said she knew she was negative. But she said she got tested because she comes in contact with patients every day who could be infected.

Not all residents are sure of their status, though. One man who got tested and spoke on the condition that his name not be used said his wife is HIV positive. Though he'd had a negative HIV test before, it reassured him to have a second one at the DMV.

Wood, the person who proposed the unconventional testing sites, said she understands they aren't right for everyone. That's fine, she said. The message: "It's important for you to take the test, whether you take it here or at another site."

Egypt stocks tumble on Cairo unrest (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's benchmark stock index tumbled more than 2 percent on Sunday as clashes between protesters and security forces entered their second day, rattling investor confidence in the country's already stumbling economy.

The Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index closed 2.43 percent lower, at 4,024 points. The slide built on a week of declines that have helped push the index's year-to-date losses to almost 44 percent. The index had tumbled almost 3 percent earlier in the day, but recouped some of the losses.

Brokers attributed the drop to the clashes between rock-throwing protesters and security forces in Cairo's central Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak in February.

The fighting entered its second day, with the protesters demanding the country's military rulers quickly announce a date to hand over power to a civilian government. The unrest comes days before the Nov. 28 parliamentary elections ? the first national vote in roughly 30 years that doesn't include the former ruling National Democratic Party.

"These are bad times," said Khaled Naga, a senior broker with Mega Investments, adding that even after a thousands-strong demonstration on Friday went relatively peacefully, there were expectations that the market would decline.

"All things considered, this is a reasonable decline," said Naga. "We were expecting worse ? maybe 5 percent."

Shares of Commercial International Bank were down almost 2.6 percent to 23.13 Egyptian pounds while Orascom Construction Industries' shares were off 3.14 percent to 220.44 Egyptian pounds.

The Jan. 25 uprising that toppled Mubarak and ended nearly three decades of authoritarian rule has battered the country's economy.

Foreign investment and tourism, which are two of the country's economic pillars, are reeling from the unrest, while frequent labor strikes and other mass protests have disrupted daily life and forced the government to adopt populist policies that have widened the deficit and added to expenses.

Already, Egypt has run through almost 40 percent of its net international reserves since December.

Brokers said continued unrest in the capital would likely only add to the drop and expected that the market's support point ? where it could bounce back ? could be around 3,800 points. But hitting that level would involve a number of days of heavy losses and so far the Egyptian market has shown a surprising ability to bounce back despite the continuing unrest and tension in the nation.

Germany's regional disparities fuel neo-Nazi culture

During a train trip across Germany, a Monitor correspondent noted regional differences that make neo-Nazi culture appealing in the east and alien in the west. A murder last week exposed the existence neo-Nazi cells in the country.

G?rlitz. Dresden. Leipzig. Halle. I?m on my way back to Frankfurt on a searing summer day. The milk train stops in every little village, rattling through eastern Germany. The half-dozen passengers are dozing off. It is early in the morning, no conversation yet.

As I gaze out the window I see a forlorn countryside ? run-down buildings, abandoned factories, empty train stations. Is this the legacy of 40 years of communism? In one of the most affluent countries in the Western world?

In the Saxony town of Halle, the train door slams open. Five young men burst into the compartment, laughing. One shouts, "Heil Hitler!" Startled, maybe scared, the passengers instantly look to their feet.?

He and his friends have shaved heads. They wear heavy black boots and black T-shirts with a huge German eagle spread on it and the word "Sturm," or "Storm" in English plastered on it. One in the group has a stack of CDs in his hands. "Rock f?r Deutschland" is written on the cover.

Now I get it. "Rock for Germany" is a rock and heavy metal concert that takes place every year in the nearby town of Gera, about 50 miles from Halle ? or that's the official version. In reality, it is one of Europe?s biggest neo-Nazi festivals. That weekend, I found out later, it attracted a record 4,000 participants. The men I saw must have spent the night at the concert.?

Their racist shouting echoed in my mind Monday as I woke to the news that police believed that two men they found dead were behind the killing in the last decade of at least nine men ? most of them of Turkish origin ? and a policewoman. The men lived in a house in Zwickau, only 20 miles from where the "Rock f?r Deutschland" concert took place, and are believed to have been members of a local neo-Nazi cell. In a video, they claimed to be part of the National Socialist Underground.?

The region of Gera is known as the heart of Germany's radical right music scene, which police say is a gateway into the?racist, neo-Nazi subculture that attracts?disillusioned young people. The festival is one of myriad small neo-Nazi rallies that the men may have had contact with. For a long time, German intelligence services paid too little attention to that subculture ? some say because they were overly focused on preventing potential terrorist attacks. ?

From my adopted city of Frankfurt, with its affluent, shimmering banks, the neo-Nazi crimes seem like something from a bad science fiction movie. But what I saw and heard in eastern Germany testifies to a sobering reality: More than 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall, Germany remains divided into two. In eastern Germany, a sense of hopelessness prevails, often hand-in-hand with soaring unemployment and resentment against anything that?s foreign.

"Here you have young people whose parents, from one day to the other, lost their ideals," said?Reinhard Melzer, the pastor of the Methodist church in the Saxony town of G?rlitz, during my visit that summer. According to him, almost a quarter of the town's population is unemployed. "There was no chance for them to digest that. This loss of ideal was never discussed. And now, the young people have to deal with that."

Now everyone is asking questions: What to do about neo-Nazi violence? Should there be a national data bank with names of neo-Nazis? Should the government ban extremist parties?

Maybe all of that is good and necessary ? but as long as Germany remains two societies, it is questionable whether those measures would work.?

On that long train journey,?I remember the feeling of relief when I reached Kassel. Finally, I was back in western territory.
