Its tone is nostalgic, sweet, romantic and fun, and the film has become a formidable force to be reckoned with on the road to Oscar gold.

Buzz for "The Artist" began back in May 2011 at the Cannes film festival, where the film premiered and Dujardin took home the Best Actor award. Mitch Kalmanson is the wild animal insurance guy, selling sometimes gigantic, multimillion-dollar policies to insure the owners of nature?s most ferocious animals and seemingly uninsurable exotic pets ? some of which might live right next door to you.

?I?ve got circuses, I?ve got fairs, zoological facilities, private facilities, some people who just want to have exotic animals because they have an interest in it,? Kalmanson told Nightline.

Kalmanson started out 20 years ago, when he took over his father?s auto and home insurance business and tweaked it. Now his office near Orlando, Fla., contains a vault of wild animal files, filing cabinets full of all the risks he assesses.

?I will probably insure almost every risk,? he said.

He has insured lions, tigers, the airlifting of Caribbean wild dolphins to aquariums, charging premiums ranging from $1,000 to $20,000. Insuring exotic animals is a rare trade, and Kalmanson is one of the biggest offices in the country.

Oddly enough, it?s not always the animals with the sharpest teeth that cause problems: Kalmanson said zebras are surprisingly mean animals. One zebra he insured turned out to be a bad bet.

?It came up and literally grabbed her hand and took all the meat, down to the bone, off,? he said. ?Exotic animals are just unpredictable and that?s why they?re exotic, and they need to be in the proper hands, and I don?t recommend them as pets.?

Kalmanson himself owns a Florida ranch, where he keeps 27 big cats, a herd of wild African cows called Watusi, and other exotic animals. Perhaps tempting fate, he lives across the street from a development of 700 homes and a golf course. And, yes, the insurer insures himself.

His business shot up 50 percent last year, he said, after a Zainsville, Ohio, incident in October when the suicidal caretaker of an unlicensed animal preserve unleashed over 50 dangerous animals, including lions, monkeys and bears, throwing the small town into a terrorizing lockdown.

?Unfortunately he had no perimeter cage. He had very marginal caging and most of them looked like dog cages that were converted to put a tiger in,? Kalmanson said. ?These animals could be enclosed and would not have had to have been killed.?

Authorities said at the time that given the lack of infrastructure, they had no choice but to kill many of the large animals.

But even under the best circumstances, exotic pets will go dangerously wild. Sandy Herold was uninsured when her 200-pound pet chimp Travis suddenly went berserk and mauled her friend, Charla Nash, ripping off her face, in 2009. That same year, a python allegedly killed a 2-year-old child in Tampa, Fla.

Just this past October, in Odessa, Texas, a 4-year-old boy was attacked and mauled by a 150-pound cougar a relative kept as a pet. The boy suffered significant damage to the left side of his body, and local animal control officials seized and euthanized the big cat.

?This has been going on for years and years? there is a long and growing casualty list of people who have been injured or killed by dangerous wild animals kept as pets,? said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. ?It is inevitable when you have these wild animals in a mix with people, that people are going to be injured and killed.?

Currently, only a dozen states require owners of exotic pets to carry liability insurance: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas. California requires insurance too, but only for circuses and shows, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

While the liability insurance is an important part of exotic pet regulation that is lacking, Pacelle said even a universal requirment would not be enough.

?The root cause of the problem is we do not have policies to forbid this sort of irresponsible behavior people have no business having a lion or a tiger in their backyard or basement,? he said. ?These are wild animals. They do not belong as pets in our households.?

Kalmanson travels the country to inspect many of the animal sanctuaries he insures, and make suggestions as to how owners can improve their facilities. The biggest problem with keeping these homemade zoos safe, he said, is that the owners often don?t have the money to upgrade them, and eventually become ?animal broke.? Often what happens, he said, is that animal owners buy the animals when they are young, and cute ? and small. But they do not take into account that a full-grown animal needing a larger cage and a bigger food supply will ultimately cost many thousands of dollars a year to keep.

?It?s expensive,? Kalmanson said. ?A lot of people just don?t have the resources. It costs them a lot more money and they don?t want to renovate, change or retrofit their facilities.?

Another problem, he said, is that regulations vary state to state and need to be more consistent, and there also needs to be more stringent federal regulations.

?There are quite a few animals in facilities that should not be there,? Kalmanson said. ?If nothing else, the county and sheriffs should know what?s in their area.?

There?s no denying the allure of a beautiful snow leopard or a powerful python, Kalmanson said, but many exotic pet facilities don?t have adequate cages for their animals and don?t have insurance. Animal owners should exercise caution and take the necessary steps to make sure they and the animals are safe, he said.

?A lot of people do what they want,? he said. ?They want the animal, the tiger leopard etc. and I just don?t think they take enough safeguards to preserve the animal and to do it right.?

Whether you are considering starting your own home daycare business, opening a greenhouse in your backyard, writing and editing from your home office (like me), or starting your own cleaning and professional organization company, there are several issues you need to carefully consider.

One Mompreneur?s Story

If you read my recent post about organizing your home life, you were introduced to Tammy Schotzko, owner of We Love Messes. Tammy shared with me some insights about home and family organization, but she also shared with me her experiences and perspectives about her dual role as a mom and entrepreneur ? mompreneur.

Tammy decided early on that she wanted to stay home with her first child (now 17), but she always pursued some type of work to contribute to the family budget. Sometimes this was babysitting, mending or quilting for others, participating on the city council, or other part-time investments of her time and energy.

Take Something You Love and Go with It

Moms are about love ? and Tammy?s move mirrors what drives so many successful mompreneurs. Like Tammy, they take their passions and interests and find a way to turn those into paychecks. Less than two years ago she decided to take what she loves, organizing, and pursue it as a career. While she first partnered with someone else, Tammy recently became the sole owner of her company in October of 2011. She said that ??once I realized that not everybody is a natural at it AND people would PAY me to do it I would?ve been crazy NOT to pursue it!? ?

Tammy?s business is now a mobile business, with most of her needed supplies waiting for her in her van. She completes paperwork, bills, correspondences, and more from her home, and at any one time has 10-15 independent contractors doing work through her business.

The Challenges Mompreneurs Face

The glass ceiling may have been lifted, but in reality ? it is still there ? if at varying heights depending upon whom you ask. Tammy has seen this ceiling herself as she works as ?the boss?. In two recent times she laughs about now, she took her husband on fire damage jobs and repeatedly faced people who automatically sought her husband out as the owner of her business. She walked away from one instance not really able to fully convince a particular gentleman that she was running the show. I can empathize with Tammy and understand her circumstances. As a cloud commuter I have often been mistaken for a man ? with the name of Chris ? as my image is not always attached with my name. Redirecting clients is not always easy, and not even always necessary. As you venture into mompreneur-land, just be aware that the ceilings exist ? just take a hammer with you.

In my interview with Tammy I heard her reiterate what I have heard from so many other women who are either entrepreneurs or figures of authority in companies. It can be challenging for women, somewhat natural caretakers, to be firm and business-focused, instead of friends to all, especially if a woman has been spending years providing love and support to her family. Tammy puts it well when she says that ??the buck, and the reputation, stops with me.? If you?re going to pursue an entrepreneurial road, you need to go prepared to be the boss.

The Best Parts of Being a Mompreneur

Working mother is a redundant term. However, if you seek a paycheck and decide to pursue building your own business or career, there are some wonderful advantages of becoming a mompreneur.

• A paycheck ? paying bills is nice.
• A sense of accomplishment ? your children can follow for inspiration.
• An entrepreneurial experience ? nothing prepares you for life?s hurdles like setting up your own track.
• Your own schedule ? this may mean more hours than you bargain for so be prepared to pace yourself.

Tammy acknowledges that wanting to do it all and being able to do it all realistically are two separate things. But she also says that mom CAN do it, just at readjusted levels of (self) expectation. At the end of the day there are only 24 hours ? in which we are moms, mompreneurs, entrepreneurs, employees, partners, friends, shoe-shoppers, gardeners, and women. Balancing all of those hats is not easy, but as the rising trend of mompreneurs shows, it just might be the new path that women like Tammy are blazing.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Soaring gasoline prices are threatening to undercut President Barack Obama's re-election prospects and offering Republicans an easy target. With prices pushing $4 a gallon and threatening to go even higher, Obama sought Thursday to confront rising public anxiety and strike back at his GOP critics.

"Only in politics do people root for bad news, do they greet bad news so enthusiastically," Obama said of Republicans. "You pay more; they're licking their chops."

Obama said dismissively that all the Republicans can talk about is more drilling ? "a bumper sticker ... a strategy to get politicians through an election" ? when the nation's energy challenges demand much more. In a speech in Miami, he promoted the expansion of domestic oil and gas exploration but also the development of new forms of energy.

For all the political claims, economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices. Certainly not in the short term. But it's clear that people are concerned ? a new Associated Press-GfK poll says seven in 10 find the issue deeply important ? so it's sure to be a political issue through the summer.

"Right now, we're experiencing yet another painful reminder of why developing new energy is so critical to our future," the president said. At an average of $3.58 a gallon, prices are already up 25 cents since Jan. 1, and experts say they could reach a record $4.25 a gallon by Memorial Day.

Those higher prices could hurt consumer spending and unravel some of the recent improvements in the economy. And they could also be a daily reminder to voters to question Obama's contention that he's making the nation ? and them ? more secure.

While motorists are already starting to complain, many economists see the $4-a-gallon mark as a breaking point above which the economy starts to suffer real pain. Analysts estimate that every one-cent increase is roughly a $1.4 billon drain on the economy.

Obama's Republican challengers aren't letting it all slide by. They have stepped up their attacks on his energy policies, including his rejection last month of a pipeline to carry oil from Canada to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. And they're full of promises.

"I've developed a program for American energy so no future president will ever bow to a Saudi king again, and so every American can look forward to $2.50-a-gallon gasoline," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in the Wednesday night GOP debate in Mesa, Ariz. He calls his strategy "Drill Here, Drill Now."

At the same event, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania ? who has warned of $5-a-gallon gas ? asserted that "we have a lot of troubles around the world, as you see the Middle East in flames and what's going on in this country with gas prices and the economy." And former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney suggested that even more troubling than rising gasoline prices was Iranian President Mahmoud "Ahmadinejad with nuclear weapons."

In his speech at the University of Miami, Obama sought to draw a contrast with his GOP challengers and made a pointed reference to what he suggested was Republican glee at rising gas prices.

"And you can bet that since it's an election year, they're already dusting off their three-point plans for $2 gas," Obama said. "I'll save you the suspense. Step one is drill, step two is drill, and step three is keep drilling. .. We've heard the same thing for 30 years. Well, the American people aren't stupid."

Addressing the rising public anxiety, Obama said, "There are no quick fixes to this problem, and you know we can't just drill our way to lower gas prices." Anyone suggesting otherwise was not being honest, he said.

Still, Obama said he had ordered his administration to search for every possible area to help consumers in the coming months. He said his administration's "all-of-the-above strategy," one that includes oil, gas, wind and solar power, is the "only real solution" to the nation's energy challenges.

Gingrich quickly dismissed Obama's energy speech as "excuses and fantasies."

Presidents often get blamed for rising gas prices, but there's not much they can do about them. The current increases at the pump have been driven by tensions in Iran and by higher demand in the U.S. as well as in China, India and other quickly growing nations.

"Obviously, people go to the pump all the time, so it's something that really hits home with the voters," said Fred Greenstein, a Princeton University professor emeritus of politics. "It's an easy issue to talk about, and not an easy issue to accomplish very much on."

In his Miami remarks, Obama said that despite political criticism of his policies "America is producing more oil today than at any time in the last eight years. He also noted that, for the first time in 30 years, the United States is now exporting more petroleum products than it imports.

But Jack Gerard, the president of the American Petroleum Institute, challenged Obama's apparent effort to take credit.

"While oil production is up, the increase relates almost entirely to investment and leasing decisions made before, sometimes long before, this administration came into office," Gerard said. "The increase is also due to oil and gas development on private and state lands over which the administration has little or no control at all."

Though Obama's approval rating on the economy has climbed, his negative rating on handling gas prices is stagnant. Just 39 percent approve of what he's doing there, and 58 percent disapprove, according to the new AP-GFK survey.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said gasoline prices are likely to keep rising as the summer driving season approaches. "Increasingly, it's becoming the biggest threat to the economy," he said. "And there is little presidents can do to influence gasoline prices in the near term."

Some lawmakers have called for Obama to release oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

"Rising gas prices could be the difference between an economy that continues to recover and an economy that sinks back into recession," said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., among those calling for such a move.

The emergency reserve is kept in salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana and contains about 700 million barrels of oil. There are 42 gallons in each barrel. Last year, as prices rose, Obama authorized the sale of 30 million barrels of oil from the reserve.

However, economists suggest that tapping the reserve to increase the amount of oil on the market has only a modest and temporary effect on gas prices.

Will Obama take that step? White House spokesman Jay Carney says, "We never take options off the table."

Obama may just have to get used to the criticism, because it probably isn't going away anytime soon, said James Thurber, an American University political science professor. "Republicans will hit him with anything that comes up which makes him look bad," he said.

Still, as long as the economy seems to keep improving, Obama probably won't be hurt too much by the attacks "unless gas goes over $5 a gallon," Thurber said.

LONDON (AP) - Chelsea captain John Terry will have knee surgery and be sidelined for up to six weeks, a further blow to the team's faltering season but relieving interim England coach Stuart Pearce of a potentially difficult roster selection.

Terry has not played for more than three weeks and Chelsea's medical team decided on Tuesday that the defender must have an operation on his right knee.

The center back trained Monday in Italy on the eve of Chelsea's Champions League match against Napoli but woke up in discomfort a day later.

"John has tried hard to be ready for tonight's game but it was clear after training last night that it was not going to be possible," Chelsea said in a statement. "He will undergo an exploratory arthroscopy in the next day or so, after which the club's medical team will be better placed to advise on a prognosis."

Coach Andre Villas-Boas said Terry will be out for up to six weeks.

The injury saves Pearce from having to decide whether to select both Terry and Rio Ferdinand for his roster for next Wednesday's exhibition against the Netherlands.

Terry was stripped of the England captaincy this month due to his upcoming trial for allegedly racially abusing Ferdinand's brother, Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

Fabio Capello quit as England coach after the Football Association stripped Terry of the captaincy without consulting the Italian.

Terry's absence will be less of a blow for England than for Chelsea, which hasn't won a game since he last played on Jan. 28 against QPR. Chelsea has slipped to fifth in the Premier League and tied Birmingham in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The 31-year-old Terry has been troubled by the knee injury since colliding with a post last month in the FA Cup against Portsmouth.
