Travelling abroad is usually safe and people come back home having enjoyed a safe and fun trip. However, there have been many incidents where people have faced difficulties and situations they were not prepared for. For proof, you just look at the number of calls and visits people make to the embassies when they are abroad. It shows that things do go wrong. Although most of the problems are solved with a phone call or a visit, some cases might arise in which the situation is not that simple in which the citizen is locked up in prison or in hospital. Hence, we provide you with the following most important tips to help make your travel safe.

  • Passport, money and visa, the most important things. Carry a photocopy of your passport in a different place as well.
  • Carry fewer items, smaller and lesser the luggage, the better.
  • Don?t take too much cash; keep debit and credit cards to be tension free. Keeping them in a hotel safe when you don?t need them is the best you can do. While taking them outside, carry money and cards at different places, keeping all in a wallet is a bad idea.
  • Try and avoid carrying any valuable jewelry and other valuables. If you don?t need a laptop on the trip, avoid taking it.
  • If you use spectacles, carry a second pair and medicines; carry them in plenty and in excess. Keep prescription of the medicines to avoid any problems with customs. Special drugs that you may take should have letter from the doctor.
  • Enter contact information in the tag of the luggage you carry. Although there?s no way of coming back if stolen, if lost some good person might just return in.
  • Items in your wallet that you won?t need like library card, social security card etc. should be left behind.
  • Keep your family or friends informed of where you plan to be and when and how they can contact you.
  • Learn about the laws of the country you are visiting. You don?t want to get into trouble for doing something you normally do in your country but is illegal in that country. For example, chewing gum is banned in Singapore.
  • If you see some political or any other kind of unrest in the country you?re about to visit, try to postpone your travel. If it is very urgent then get information about the situation of the places you?re going to be at, then only make a decision.
  • Do not cross your credit limit, confirm with your bank if you have a doubt. There have been many cases where people went over the limit and were arrested even though they did it for they were unaware.
  • Get insured, check how much you get if you lose your luggage or become a victim of theft. Also look at how much your health insurance is going to cover if you need treatment while abroad.
  • Carry copy of your medical history which will help the doctors in case of an emergency.

Hope you have a pleasant trip.
