Your Apple TV Will Soon Run iOS Applications in HD Glory

Developers Steven Troughton-Smith and TheMudKip are working on bringing iOS applications to your living room, and they?ve made significant progress in recent weeks.

First, 9to5Mac reported that they were running regular iOS apps on the Apple TV through a jailbreak hack, and that they were even able to have multiple apps running side-by-side. Later, they reported that the developers were able to get full screen iPad apps to run directly on the Apple TV.

So why is this news? Some have satiated their desire for iOS apps on the big (TV) screen by using AirPlay mirroring. But this hack brings the apps directly to the Apple TV, allowing them to run much faster and more smoothly.

We?ve known for a long time that the second-generation Apple TV runs a customized version of iOS, and developers have tinkered with running iOS apps on the device for months, but none have publicly displayed such effective fruits of their labor. Troughton-Smith and TheMudKip had to rewrite Springboard, the always-running app that launches your iOS apps, here?s what they?ve got working so far:

The hack is still in very early stages, but Steven and TheMudKip remain hard at work to bring native iOS apps to your Apple TV.
