Ohioans Share Thoughts on ASPCA Boycott of Pet Stores Selling Puppies (ContributorNetwork)

One of the largest pet store chains in the Midwest announced the stores will no longer sell puppies or dogs. The decision comes on the heels of an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals campaign to boycott all stores that support puppy mills. Ohio animal advocacy groups are circulating petitions to place the Dog Auction Ban Act on the ballot in 2012. The legislation would put an end to the large puppy mill auctions such as the one in Holmes County which was featured in an undercover video created by the Humane Society of the U.S.

My Ohio Twitter followers shared their thoughts on the Jack's Pets decision and puppy mill auctions via instant messaging and email.

* "I have not gone to Jack's Pets for a long time because they do support the efforts of puppy mill operators. I will gladly begin purchasing my pet food and supplies from them again now." -- Lucy Rollins, nurse, Columbus.

* "I do not support puppy mills and would probably vote for the dog auction ban, but I do not want to see all pet stores give in to the ASPCA and stop selling puppies. I would like for them to still sell puppies from local breeders who are AKC certified and love and care for their animals." -- Rick Perkins, corrections officer, Cincinnati.

* "Anyone who has watched the video or seen the pictures taken at a puppy mill or the Holmes County auction should support the effort to end such horrid practices in our state. There is no Jack's Pets where I live, but if there was I would certainly shop there now." -- Chris Lawhead, Ohio University professor, Athens.

* "I would like to see all puppy mills shut down but do not want to see us go overboard with more laws which inhibit the responsible sell of puppies at pet stores. My granddaughter sells one litter of puppies per year to a local store and uses the money to buy books for college. The local pet owner has a nice dog run for them at outside the stores and clearly loves all the animals in his shop." -- Vic Steenrod, retired small business owner, New Lexington.

* "It is about time that there is real movement on the puppy mill and dog auction issue in Ohio. Jack's Pets made a good decision, but was motivated by their bank account and not a true love of dogs. The practice had gone on too long and ended after the ASPCA boycott grew." -- Robin Richards, retail manager, Cincinnati.

* "I used to work in a pet store while going to college to become a veterinarian. The conditions and care of puppies housed in too small enclosures has not improved over the past 20 years. I hope the ASPCA keeps the pressure on and pet owners do boycott all stores which sell puppies and support puppy mill operators." -- Dean Grinstead, veterinarian, Zanesville.
